St. Patrick’s Day fun and frivolity


Pin on a shamrock and try your luck. St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner. Here is a look at the major parties, parades and events in the area.

PARADES

Mahoning Valley St. Patrick’s Day parade, Market Street, Boardman, 1 p.m. Sunday. The theme is “The Claddagh – Love, Loyalty, Friendship,” and grand marshal is the Rev. Timothy O’Neill. Between 25,000 and 30,000 people annually watch the massive parade, which is sponsored by The Vindicator and 21 WFMJ-TV. The parade begins on McClurg Road and heads north on Market Street to Southwoods Avenue. Dozens of political and community officials and members of service and entertainment organizations march in the parade. The other honorees are the Rev. John Keehner, Lord Mayor of Kilkenny; and Jim Doran, Ockerman Award. Go to mvstpatrickparade.com.

PARTIES

Barrel 33, 8208 E. Market St., Warren, will celebrate the holiday March 17. Live music will include Rich Rollo and Steve Schubert, noon to 2 p.m., Ed Amman and Mark Soini and Christine Witt from 8 to 11. Food and drink specials will be offered all day.

Halliday’s Winery, 2400 NE River Road, Lake Milton, will host St. Patrick’s Day activities from March 17-20. Live music March 18 will include Uncharted Course, 7 to 10 p.m., and March 19, Blue Collar Band, 7 to 10 p.m. Entertainment by cellist Carol Birchak will be from 2 to 5 p.m. March 19. Irish food specials will be offered. There will be free wine tastings at 5 p.m. March 19 and at 4 p.m. March 20.

The Horseshoe Bar, 206 E. Market St., Warren, St. Patty’s day party will start with an opening at 11 a.m. Complimentary corned beef will be served at 3 p.m., a bagpiper will perform at 4 and step dancers will perform at 5.

Kravitz Deli, 3135 Belmont Ave., Liberty, offers Irish food, including rainbow bagels as shown on cover, entertainment and festivities from Friday through St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. On Friday, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., featuring an old Dublin fish fry and entertainment with County Mayo ($2 cover), 6 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, open 9 a.m to 9 p.m. for St. “Practice” Day and entertainment with Seamus featuring Jom Johnston, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Sunday, open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a Leprechaun Brunch; Monday, open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for a “Lucky 7” day celebrating 77 years in business with $7.77 food specials; Tuesday, St. Rueben’s Day with the Shaffer Brothers ($2 cover) and happy hour all day and Irish food specials; Wednesday, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for St. Patrick’s Eve and a performance from County Mayo ($2 cover); and March 17, entertainment from DJ Larry Walk, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Colleen McNally Harris, 3 to 6, and Brady’s Leap, 7 to 10.

Magic Tree Pub and Eatery, 7463 South Ave, Boardman. St. Patrick’s Week will be celebrated with activities Sunday through March 17. On Sunday, the restaurant will open at 8 a.m. for eggs and kegs, Shaffer Brothers Band, Ohio Bagpiper, Boardman Band Drumline, Bogside Bhoys, Irish Trad Session, a meet and greet with Frozen’s Elsa and Anna; Tuesday, Flaunt App Launch party from 7 to 10 p.m. will include St. Paddy’s Day trivia with Winfrield Dray at 7:30; March 17, open at 8 a.m. for eggs and kegs, Damian Knapp, Todd the Piano Man & Dean the Drummer from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Ohio Bagpiper, Fast Freddie live broadcast on 93.3 WNCD The Wolf, and the Chardon Polka Band from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.; March 18, The Rage Band, 8 p.m. to midnight.

McMenamy’s, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles. St. Patty’s Day Party on Tuesday with Tara’s Fire, 3 to 5 p.m.; step dancers, 5:15 and 7:15 p.m., and the Sensations, 6 to 9 p.m. Doors open at 2. $5 cover (free for age 6 and under).

Mojo’s Pub and Grill, 6292 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. The Zou and Spirit of the Bear perform at 7:30 p.m. March 17.

Myrddin Winery, 3020 Scenic Ave., Berlin Center, “Murder Mystery Party: Murder Most Green” on Friday. Guests will gather at 6 p.m., and the mystery dinner is at 7. Guests will discover who did away with Patrick Flaherty before he could celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Cost is $22, but wine and gratuity will be extra. Purchase tickets in advance.

O’Donold’s Irish Pub, 6000 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. Activities for Saturday include a St. Patty’s Day 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk with registration at 10:30 a.m. and the run at noon. The first 150 registrants will receive a T-shirt. Cash awards presented to the top three overall male and female runners. $20 for pre-registration and $25 on day of race. A St. Baldrick’s Day Celebration will follow at noon Saturday. Volunteers will have their heads shaved to raise money for cancer research. Gift baskets, raffles, food, drink specials and entertainment will run throughout the day. St. Patrick’s Day activities on March 17 will begin at 5:30 a.m. Entertainment will include Shaffer Brothers, 8 a.m. to noon; Dolan Family Singers, 1 to 4 p.m.; 80’s proof, 4 to 6; Bearded Irish Bastards, 6 to 8; Northern Whiskey, 8 to 10; Graphic Pink, 10 to close. Burke School of Irish Dance and bagpipers will perform throughout the event.

O’Donold’s Irish Pub & Grill Downtown, 122 W. Federal St., Youngstown. St. Patrick’s Day activities will begin at 5:30 a.m. March 17. Dolan Family Singers will perform from 8 a.m. to noon; bagpipers, 1 p.m.; Bearded Irish Bastards, 3:30 to 4:30; bagpipers, 4:30; Northern Whiskey, 5:30 to 7:30; and a DJ from 8 to 2:30 a.m. Burke School of Irish Dance will stop in throughout the day to perform.

Overture Restaurant, 260 W. Federal St., Youngstown, will have a “Taste of the Irish” event at 7 a.m. March 17. Classic Irish dishes, drink specials and music will be offered.

Quaker Steak & Lube, 5800 Interstate Blvd., Austintown, Food and drink specials and all-day entertainment will be offered from 6 a.m. to midnight March 17. Entertainment in the Vette Room will include Captain John Stout, 8 to 10 a.m.; County Mayo Irish Band, 10 to 1 p.m.; Greg Iskat, 1 to 3 p.m.; Rogues of Rafferty, 3:30 to 6:30; and Kevin Richards Trio, 7 to 9. On the Brickyard Patio, entertainment will include Jeff Welsh, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Jim Golen, 1 to 3; and DJ Mark Anthony, 3 to 7.

Quaker Steak & Lube, 435 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman. Food and drink specials and all-day entertainment will be offered starting at 9 a.m. March 17. Entertainment includes Richard Boston, 10 a.m. to noon; Rick Bartholomy, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30; County Mayo Irish Band, 3 to 6; Captain John Stout, 7 to 9; Trivi-oke with MVP Entertainment, 9 to midnight.

Quaker Steak & Lube, 2191 Millennium Blvd., Cortland, early opening at 8 a.m. March 17 with holiday food and drink specials available all day. Entertainment includes Jim Golen from 8 to 11 a.m.; Captain John Stout from 11 to 3 p.m.; Rogues of Rafferty from 1 to 3; Joe Fritz from 3 to 6; and Tyler Jenkins Trio, 6 to 9.

Quaker Steak & Lube, 101 Chestnut St., Sharon, Pa., early opening at 6 a.m. Tuesday with green beer and breakfast and dinner food specials throughout the day. Entertainment times are approximate and subject to change. V2 Wine Bar Trattoria, 100 W. Federal St., Youngstown, 5th annual “ShamRock on the Block” St. Patrick’s day party will take place March 17. There will be food and drink specials, giveaways and beads. Entertainment in an outdoor tent will include Baxter Burgundy featuring Courtney Waskin, DJ Wrenny Wren and DJ Outro performing until close. Shuttles will run all day between Vernon’s and V2.

SPECIAL EVENTS

St. “Practice” Day Beerfest, will be Friday at O’Donold’s, 6000 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. Proceeds benefit the Rich Center for Autism. VIPs will enter at 6, and activities for all others will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Cost is $35 per person, and will include ticketed tastes and a souvenir glass; a $45 VIP ticket will provide tastes, souvenir glass, admission to mead, cold brew and distillery tents, and free admission to the St. Baldrick and St. Patrick’s Day celebration, a $10 value. Beverages from 60 regional and local craft breweries will be served in a large heated tent. Opening ceremonies will include bagpipers and a performance by the Burke School of Irish Dance. Graphic Pink will perform from 8 to 11 p.m.

St. Patty’s Day Beer Crawl, registration at B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday. The crawl begins at 7 p.m. Participating establishments include Imbibe Martini Bar, Rye’s Craft Beer, Liquid Blu, Downtown Circle Hookah Lounge, B&O Station, Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts, O’Donold’s, V2, The Federal, Draught House, Rust Belt Tap Room, Roberto’s, Youngstown Maennerchor, Christopher’s, Royal Oaks and Kelly’s Bar and Grille. A trolley will loop to every location every 15 to 20 minutes. Cost is $4. Proceeds will benefit Golden String Radio.

Leprechaun Lollapalooza, with activities in the Poland Library, and its bookstore and Kravitz Deli, all at 311 S. Main St., Poland, on Saturday. There will be sales all day in the library bookstore, and Irish food will be available all day at Kravitz, including corned beef and cabbage dinners, stout stew, corned beef and reuben sandwiches and Bailey’s cheesecake. Here is a schedule of events: 10:30 a.m., meet the Leprechaun; 10:45, parade of leprechauns for children 6th grade and younger, guests should dress in St. Patrick’s Day gear, and each child who enters the parade will receive an entry for a chance to win a book of Irish fairy tales; 11, St. Patrick’s Day story time for children; 11:30 to 2 p.m., scavenger hunt for grades 6 and under, noon, performance from Burke Irish Dancers; 1 p.m., fastest pickle, corned beef and Lucky Charms eating contests; 2, story time for children of all ages; and 3 to 5, Irish music with Colleen McNally Harris and Kirk Harper.
