YSU football adds two assistant coaches

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State football program has hired two assistant coaches.

Nic McKissic-Luke joins the Penguins from South Dakota State to become the new running backs coach, while Joe Ganz comes from Nebraska to coach YSU’s tight ends.

McKissic-Luke coached SDSU’s running backs since 2013, while for the previous five seasons, he coached at Division II Benedict College. Additionally, he worked two summers (2011 and 2012) with the Arizona Cardinals.

Also, as a player, McKissic-Luke was a running back for Alabama before transferring to Alabama A&M in 2004.

Ganz was a standout quarterback for Nebraska from 2004-08 — his final year coming under Bo Pelini, YSU’s second-year head coach. He had been a graduate assistant coach for the Cornhusker’s since 2012 and a member of the Nebraska coaching staff in a lesser role since 2010.

Announcer: Ejection was misunderstanding

GREEN BAY, Wis.

Radio listeners might have been puzzled to hear another team’s play-by-play announcer briefly calling Green Bay’s Horizon League semifinal win.

A referee ejected Phoenix announcer Matt Menzl during Monday’s game against No. 1 seed Valparaiso in Detroit. Menzl says it was all a misunderstanding. He says the ref thought he was waving him off after a call went against Green Bay.

Menzl tells Green Bay Press-Gazette Media that he talks with his hands, and his gestures were misinterpreted.

Menzl handed his headset to an Oakland University play-by-play announcer and stepped away to explain the situation. Menzl returned to the microphone and says he missed only “a couple minutes” of game action.
