Orchids of China

When: Today, 6 to 8 p.m.

What: Tom Sampliner, noted native-flower photographer and native orchid specialist, will present a slideshow tour of his visit to China in 2015. A great number of orchids treated as houseplants in the Northeast U.S. grow naturally in various areas of China. Tom also will include scenery and sights of the areas he visited.

NESTBOX WORKSHOP

When: Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m.

What: Make a nesting box for local bird species such as bluebirds, chickadees and house wrens.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva

Cost: Free

Details: Bring your own hammer. All other materials will be provided. Registration limited to 15. One nestbox per family. Best for age 8 to adult. Register by Friday.

Sprout Club

When: Next Thursday, 1 to 2 p.m.

What: Join this spring to learn about the amazing world of plants with topics that include: pizza plants, moss pets and herbs. Each class will include an activity and snack. Attend all three classes and receive a plant-related prize.

Cost: $15 for the series; $7 per class

EXPLORERS

When: Next Thursday, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

What: The Explorers will learn about cavity-nesting birds and how to provide nesting structures for birds such as bluebirds, chickadees and house wrens. Participants will make a small nestbox to take home.

Sandwich Bread 101

When: March 19, noon to 4 p.m.

What: Grab an apron and learn to make bread that tastes like Grandma’s with Sara Scudier. You will make enriched dough that also can be used to make rolls. Ingredients will include milk, butter and a sweetener.

Starting Seeds Indoors

When: Mar. 21, 9:30 a.m. to noon

What: Have coffee with the master gardeners and learn when to start your seeds indoors for outside plantings. Discussion will focus on the importance of using the correct growing medium, proper lighting and correct watering procedures for successful germination.
