Source of spill
WARREN
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency says hydraulic oil that leaked into a stream in the Golden Triangle area of Warren and Howland on Monday and then migrated into the Mahoning River came from a piece of equipment called a side loader at Wheatland Tube.
Dina Pierce, an OEPA spokeswoman, said Wednesday that oil leaked from Wheatland Tube on Dietz Road in Howland because of a malfunction in the equipment.
The company Wheatland Tube hired has nearly completed the cleanup of the oil, she said. One job left is to clean out the storm-sewer pipe that carried the fluid to the river in Packard Park to make sure none of the oil remains, Pierce said.
The OEPA has issued a notice of violation to the company for an unauthorized discharge into the waters of the state. The violation is not likely to result in a fine as long as Wheatland Tube completes the cleanup, she said.
Gun found in purse
YOUNGSTOWN
Police reports said officers found a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol inside a woman’s purse Tuesday evening during a traffic stop.
Fredericka Winlock, 23, is in the Mahoning County jail on $30,000 bond after her arraignment Wednesday in municipal court before visiting Judge Barbara Watson on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.
Reports said Winlock, of Youngstown, was driving a car that was pulled over at Erie Street and East Ravenwood Avenue for failing to stop at a stop sign. Winlock has a suspended license, and when police searched the car, they found the gun in a purse in the back seat. She is prohibited from having a gun because of a pending felonious-assault case in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
