SPRING TRAINING roundup
Indians 4, Mariners 3
GOODYEAR, ARIZ.
Mike Napoli had two hits and drove in a run, helping Cleveland Indians beat Seattle. Jose Ramirez also had two hits and drove in a run, and Juan Uribe doubled in his first at-bat with the Indians. Francisco Lindor had a sacrifice fly. Mariners right-hander Nathan Karns allowed two runs, one earned, and five hits in three innings. Karns was acquired in a November trade with Tampa Bay and is competing for a spot in Seattle’s rotation. Mike Zunino, Daniel Robertson and Ed Lucas each drove in a run for Seattle. Cleveland right-hander Trevor Bauer pitched three solid innings, yielding one run and one hit. The 25-year-old Bauer went 11-12 with a 4.55 ERA last year, establishing several career highs.
Phillies 4, Pirates 2
CLEARWATER, FLA.
Darin Ruf hit a two-run homer in the first inning to help Philadelphia edge Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old Ruf came into camp competing with former MVP Ryan Howard for regular playing time at first base. Phillies manager Pete Mackanin has talked about platooning the two first baseman and Tuesday’s game could strengthen that standpoint: the righty-hitting Ruf’s home run came off Pittsburgh lefty Jonathon Niese.
Royals 3, Rockies 2
SURPRISE, ARIZ.
In what became a real “B” game at spring training, a swarm of bees briefly delayed the Royals’ win over the Rockie. Edinson Volquez threw three hitless innings for the Royals, but the insects caused the biggest buzz. They sent Kansas City manager Ned Yost, members of his coaching staff and fans scurrying early in the exhibition matchup at Surprise Stadium. Yost and his coaches like to sit on folding chairs outside the dugout, and the bees caused them to duck for cover. Lowell Hutchinson, a retired beekeeper from St. Joseph, Missouri, came out of the stands to assist with gathering them. With the scarcity of honey bees, Yost implored the bees be saved, not exterminated. Bubba Starling hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer in the Royals sixth off Jason Motte. Paulo Orlando also homered for Kansas City. Cristhian Adames homered for Colorado.
White Sox 10, Brewers 6.
GLENDALE, ARIZ.
Avisail Garcia tripled and homered in his first two at-bats, and the White Sox defeated the Brewers. Jimmy Rollins also homered as the White Sox knocked out Chase Anderson after 12/3 innings. Garcia and Rollins each had three hits. Garcia, whose homer reached the concourse over the left-field bullpen, drove in four runs and Rollins had three RBIs.
Angels 5, Diamondbacks (ss) 3
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ.
The Angels’ Garrett Richards twice hit 100 mph on the radar gun at Salt River Fields. Richards, who will be the Angels’ opening day starter, also hit 99 mph four times in his 22/3 inning stint. The right-hander said he couldn’t recall hitting 100 since his college days and didn’t know what to think about doing it in his second outing of spring training. Richards said his arm felt great and brushed aside giving up three runs on four hits. He struck out four. Carlos Perez and Ji-Man Choi each hit two-run homers off Arizona’s Josh Collmenter. .
Dodgers 7, Cubs 3
MESA, ARIZ.
Clayton Kershaw gave up one run and five hits in three innings in his second spring training start. Kershaw struck out five and walked one. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks allowed two hits in three scoreless innings. Travis Wood followed and gave up three runs and six hits in three innings.
