Two people were arraigned Tuesday in Girard Municipal Court on driving-under-the-influence charges in separate incidents.

Police stopped Michael Deans, 29, of Hubbard about 2 a.m. Friday on Woodland Avenue for stopping in the middle of the roadway before driving onto the curb and nearly hitting several telephone poles, according to a report.

Deans, who declined a blood-alcohol-content test or to perform field-sobriety tests, smelled of alcohol and marijuana, police reported.

Police found a small amount of suspected marijuana and some rolling papers after searching him and his car, a police report states. He also was cited on charges of drug abuse, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving left of center and impeding traffic.

In a separate incident, police responded to Morris Avenue and South State Street about 11 p.m. Friday to check a report of a driver who was slumped over the steering wheel.

The driver, Keith Colvin, 55, of Youngstown initially refused to leave his vehicle, swore repeatedly at an officer and made threats, a police report states.

Colvin had a small knife in his pocket and an open bottle of whiskey in his car, according to the report. He also is charged with violating the city’s open-container law, disorderly conduct, menacing and impeding traffic. Colvin declined to submit to a breath test or perform field-sobriety tests. He was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after complaining of an injury.

Both Deans and Colvin entered not-guilty pleas at their arraignments. The date of Dean’s preliminary hearing has yet to be set, a court clerk said. Colvin will appear at 1:30 p.m. April 27 for a preliminary hearing.
