Ohio EPA and Warren offices probe fluid spill into Mahoning River

WARREN

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Warren Fire Department and Warren Water Pollution Control Department have contained a spill estimated at 100 gallons of hydraulic fluid that got into the Mahoning River at Packard Park Monday.

Today, they are cleaning it up and searching the industrial area known as the Golden Triangle of Warren and Howland to identify the source.

The Golden Triangle is about a mile east of Packard Park.

Two vacuum truck loads of the liquid were sucked from a stream running under Griswold Street near Dietz Road today, and two sets of control booms were placed in the creek, city officials said.

The outlet of a storm sewer into the river appears to have been the source of the liquid getting into the river.

It is just behind the Packard Museum on Mahoning Avenue.

The spill, reported to the Ohio EPA at 5:15 pm Monday, apparently, by a citizen, appears to have not killed any wildlife, said Dina Pierce, OEPA spokesperson.
