The Austintown Council of PTAs and the Fitch Art Department will host the eighth Souper Supper event at Fitch High School from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Entertainment and a 50/50 basket raffle will take place during the event. All proceeds will benefit needy families of the Austintown Local School District. Tickets are $7 for soup, salad, roll, dessert, a beverage and handmade bowl, and $5 for a meal only or bowl only.
Campbell schools partner with Canine Companions

In an effort to better serve the needs of students with physical and developmental disabilities, Campbell ‚ãCity Schools‚ã ha‚ãve‚ã partnered with Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.
Robert Fick, intervention specialist at Campbell Elementary & Middle School, was trained and paired with a service canine companion. The canine will work in the kindergarten through seventh-grade building, mostly with the students in his multiple-disability classroom.
“I learned of the program several years ago from Kerry Dumas Pettit of the Trumbull County Animal Welfare League,” Flick said. “She has been training dogs for Canine Companions for Independence for several years.”
Canfield student earns distinction of Eagle Scout
CANFIELD
An Eagle Scout is the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting, and a Canfield student has earned this distinction. Zachary Ryan Gierlach, a senior, had his Court of Honor in January. Zachary is part of Boy Scout Troop 115 in Canfield, a division of the Greater Western Reserve Council.
Zachary is active in his church, Canfield Presbyterian Church. He was a youth leader and is a youth elder. He serves on the vision committee and is active with mission trips. He has helped in the Dominican Republic, Pittsburgh and New Jersey. Additionally, Zachary planned The Peace Walk project, which aims to enhance a public area of the church grounds into a nature walk area. Zachary coordinated the project that raised funds to clear the area and create a half-mile nature walk space.
Upon graduation, he aspires to continue his education and become a history teacher.
GCC student presents paper
GROVE CITY, PA.
Grove City College student Ben Leavitt of Grove City (’16) presented an academic paper at the recent 2016 Phi Alpha Theta Biennial Convention. Leavitt shared his work on the family in 17th-century New Hampshire at the history honorary society’s meeting in Orlando, Fla. Leavitt said he enjoyed the experience and appreciated the opportunity it offered.
“This daunting task – presenting my paper to a room of strangers from across the country – required me more than ever to refine my thoughts and to speak as a historian should: with clarity and brevity, realizing that I still know very little,” Leavitt said.
Ohio PTA gets grant
COLUMBUS
Ohio PTA received a $15,000 grant to provide PTA members and others with information about Ohio’s Learning Standards and assessments.
A grass-roots committee and the Ohio PTA board of directors will help facilitate conversations about Ohio’s assessments and score reports and provide information and resources to families.
