• Gathering Place event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14 at Lord of Life Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield. Jim Loboy of WYTV will be speaker, and lunch will be provided. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens on the second Monday of each month. A variety of games and activities are offered. • Girard Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave., is sponsoring an AARP Tax Aide Program for those with moderate to low income and all senior citizens each Tuesday and Thursday through April 14. No appointments are taken; taxes are done first come, first served from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For information on required documentation, call the center at 330-545-6596.
• Niles S.C.O.P.E. Senior Center, 14 E. State St., is offering free tax preparation by the AARP Tax Aide Program for those with moderate to low income and for senior citizens with simple returns, each Friday through April 15, excluding Good Friday on March 25. Taxes will be done by appointment only from 9 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. The center is hosting a trip to Mountaineer Casino on March 15. Cost is $22 with $25 in free play. An optional buffet is $6. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from Niles and return at about 4:30 p.m. Payment is due with reservation. The center also will host a corned beef dinner at 11:30 a.m. March 16 to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Cost is $4. Registration is required by March 14. Guests who stay for 1 p.m. bingo will receive a free bingo card. Payment may be made on the day of the event. A free Lunch and Learn session will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 18. Jeff Orr with the Trumbull Ashtabula Group Law Enforcement Task Force will discuss drug awareness in the community. A dental van will visit the center from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 28. A hygienist will be available for cleanings and a dentist for dental procedures. Both are free to those whole qualify. Stop by the center or call 330-544-3676 to register for any of the events.
• Senior Independence Senior Center of Mahoning County, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, has planned the following: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and Fridays through April 11, income tax preparation with AARP tax experts, by appointment only; Tuesday, brush, knife and needle club and a Matter of Balance at 10 a.m., beginner and intermediate bridge at noon, caregiver support group about signs and symptoms of colon cancer presented by Area Agency on Aging 11 at 1 p.m. and drums alive exercise at 2:30; Wednesday, computer classes for basic, intermediate and advanced at 9 and 11 a.m., watercolors at 10, tap class at noon, 500 card club at 1 p.m., and line dancing at 1:30; Thursday, woodcarvers at 9 a.m., needlecraft and St. Elizabeth’s diabetic support group at 10, and watch our weight and Matter of Balance presented by Girard Multi-Generational Center at 1 p.m.; and Friday, R.O.M. exercise at 10 a.m. Call in advance to make reservations for classes and events at 330-744-5071.
