Officer of the year
The Ohio State Penitentiary on Youngstown’s East Side has chosen Officer Michael Filipowicz as its Officer of the Year.
He will represent OSP at the Corrections Training Academy on May 6 for the selection of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction’s Ronald C. Marshall Correction Officer of the Year award.
Filipowicz has pursued additional training in instructional skills and vulnerability assessments. He also is a member of the Security Threat Group, Northeast Region Critical Incident Scenario Design Team, Back to Basics committee and the Veterans committee.
He is a Marine Corps veteran, having spent four years on active duty and four years in the Reserves. Filipowicz volunteers at the Portage County Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, where he picks up donations.
He is a new father of a girl born on Jan. 29.
OSP houses 447 primarily maximum-level security inmates at the facility off state Route 616. Built in 1998, the prison employs 327 correction officers and staff.
