YOUNGSTOWN
A woman who was present with her baby when vice squad officers served a search warrant at a South Side home was taken into custody on a warrant.
Another person was arrested there late Wednesday afternoon on a charge of possession of heroin.
About the same time, patrol officers arrested a man on a heroin charge while investigating a possible breaking and entering, also on the South Side.
Officers serving the search warrant about 5:20 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of East Avondale Avenue found Brittney Fitzgerald, 28, with her baby at the home. Reports said Fitzgerald had a warrant from municipal court for failure to appear on a driving-under-suspension case. She was taken to the Mahoning County jail and her baby was given to relatives, reports said.
Also arrested was Dawan Williams, 30, who listed the home as his address. Reports said officers saw him in the driveway when they pulled up, and they quickly detained him. When Williams was searched, police found $698 in cash in his pockets, reports said.
At a vacant house next door, police found suspected heroin and cocaine in the siding, reports said. Williams also was taken to the jail on charges of possession of heroin and possession of cocaine.
Vice officers served another warrant about 6:20 p.m. at a home in the 400 block of Williamson Avenue, where they found a security camera, a bag of suspected heroin, a bag of suspected crack cocaine and $305 in cash. A man there was taken into custody, but jail records show he was released with no charges being filed.
About the same time vice officers were on East Avondale, patrol officers were called to the 1700 block of Pointview Avenue for a report of a man breaking into a vacant house.
Reports said when officers arrived they found Shon Simon, 45, of Struthers, who matched the description of the man who was trying to get inside the home, walk away.
Simon told police he used to live in the home and admitted trying to get inside, reports said.
Simon was searched, and officers found a bag of suspected heroin in his clothes, reports said. A supervisor told officers Simon did live in the home at one time, so he was not charged with breaking and entering, but he was booked into the jail on a possession of heroin charge, reports said.
