Reds’ Phillips, Duvall tag Tribe’s Salazar

GOODYEAR, Ariz.

Brandon Phillips had a sacrifice fly and Adam Duvall added a two-run single in the first inning off Danny Salazar, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-1 win over the Cleveland Indians.

The Reds obtained Duvall from San Francisco for Mike Leake at the trade deadline.

Anthony DeSclafani and veteran free agent Jonathan Sanchez pitched two hitless innings each before Joey Butler singled in the fifth off J.J. Hoover, who is the favorite to replace Aroldis Chapman as the Reds’ closer.

Tyler Naquin’s single and Joey Votto’s throwing error sent Butler to third. Erik Gonzalez’ sacrifice fly scored Butler, a waiver pick up from Tampa Bay.

Jay Bruce doubled off Bryan Shaw, the Indians’ setup man, to start a five-run inning. Six straight Reds reached base off Shaw.

Floyd solid, Smoak hits HR as Jays top Bucs

BRADENTON, Fla.

Finally healthy after a three-year battle with injuries, right-hander Gavin Floyd turned in a solid start for the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday in a 10-8 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Justin Smoak hit a towering solo home run for the Blue Jays. The ball rode a light breeze and cleared the concourse in right-center field.

Floyd worked two innings and gave up one run on two hits. He walked one and struck out two.

The 33-year-old Floyd had Tommy John surgery in 2013. While working his way back, he twice snapped a bone in his elbow.

FIU suspends coach after player allegation

MIAMI

FIU women’s basketball coach Marlin Chinn has been suspended after one of his players told The Miami Herald that he pursued her sexually and gave her a $600 loan.

The university announced that an internal investigation is ongoing, declining further comment. Chinn’s agent Brian Stanchak declined comment when reached by The Associated Press, and a message left at the coach’s office was not immediately returned.

The player, Destini Feagin, told the newspaper that she was suspended for four games because she resisted Chinn’s advances.

A university spokesman did not know if Feagin’s suspension — which was officially termed as being over a violation of team rules — would be lifted as part of the investigation.

Chinn, 45, is in his first season at FIU, after spending the previous six years as an assistant at Maryland. FIU is 4-23 this season.
