POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Hubbard, Liberty and Girard:

HUBBARD

Feb. 24

Animal complaint: A woman reported that a dog had bitten her as she walked to work in the 200 block of West Liberty Street.

Feb. 25

Bad check: A Hubbard woman told police a man had asked her to cash three checks totaling $480 before all were returned for insufficient funds.

Identity fraud: While at a West Liberty Street gas station, a township woman learned that her bank card had been used twice without authorization at a gas station in Illinois.

Identity fraud: A West Water Street woman suspected a man likely had used her personal information to steal money from another person.

Feb. 26

Assault: An Elmwood Drive woman told officers her 11-year-old daughter had been pushed down, resulting in a scrape to her ankle, during gym class at Hubbard Middle School, 350 Hall Ave.

Arrest: While responding to a report of an unwanted person, authorities took into custody John A. Chiodo III of Elmwood Drive, Hubbard. The 39-year-old Chiodo was wanted on charges of assault, telephone harassment and disorderly conduct.

Feb. 28

Theft: Two males reportedly stole two toy guns from Dollar General, 886 W. Liberty St.

Drugs: A man reported that while at a family member’s Christian Avenue residence, he found in a safe 15 spoons likely used for heroin, parts of 10 syringes and three other pieces of drug paraphernalia. No charges had been filed at the time of the report, however.

Feb. 29

Drugs: A traffic stop near Belle Vista Avenue led to minor-misdemeanor citations charging 18-year-old Nicholas S. Battaglia of Bentley Street, Hubbard, with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. A suspected marijuana pipe and a device commonly used to grind marijuana were found, a report stated.

LIBERTY

Feb. 25

Domestic violence: Brandon L. Davanzo, 19, of Tibbetts-Wick Road, Girard, faced one misdemeanor count each of domestic violence and unlawful restraint after his girlfriend alleged Davanzo had struck her face during an argument about their relationship while at a Belmont Avenue motel. Davanzo also held the accuser against her will in his vehicle, a report said.

Drugs: A traffic stop near Belmont Avenue led to 27-year-old Corben T. Bishop’s arrest on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs. Bishop, of Barth Drive, Youngstown, had a prescription bottle with a partially-torn label, and it was unknown for whom the prescription had been written, a report said.

Identity fraud: An elderly Church Hill-Hubbard Road woman told officers an accountant advised her to file a police report because someone may have used her personal information on a federal income-tax return.

Feb. 26

Arrest: While answering a disturbance call on Monticello Boulevard, authorities took into custody 20-year-old Dwaune A. Riggins of Monticello, Liberty, upon discovering he was wanted on a robbery charge. Riggins also was charged with obstructing justice when, police alleged, he lied about his name and date of birth, claiming he was a juvenile.

Theft/forgery: A Ventura Drive man who had listed a 10-speed bicycle online for $120 told authorities he received a $1,020 check with a request to forward $900 of it to a third party in Batavia, Ill., before discovering the check was a forgery.

Arrest: Youngstown police in the 2700 block of Belmont Avenue handed 30-year-old Timothy A. McGowan to township authorities. McGowan, of Lincoln Street, Masury, was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant.

Domestic violence: A charge was pending against an 18-year-old township man after his former girlfriend alleged that during an argument related to a property dispute, he shoved her out of a car while it was in motion.

Assault/criminal damaging: A Goldie Road woman alleged a 42-year-old Cortland woman drove through and damaged part of her front lawn and, after returning later, struck the accuser’s face about four times.

Feb. 27

Arrest: Cherea M. Fordham, 41, of Crandall Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with operating a vehicle impaired after having been pulled over on Belmont Avenue. Fordham’s blood-alcohol count was 0.170, more than twice Ohio’s 0.08 legal limit, a report showed.

Theft: A worker for a Belmont Avenue business noticed $250 and a set of car keys had been removed from her locker.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 4000 block of Monticello Boulevard through the front door, though it appeared nothing was missing.

Feb. 28

Arrest: Zachary J. Markovich, 22, of East Western Reserve Road, Poland, was picked up at the Mahoning County jail on a township warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Harassment: An employee with a Belmont Avenue store reported having received an inappropriate Facebook message that was sexual in nature.

Fraud: A Goleta Avenue woman discovered someone without consent had used her credit/debit card to withdraw $61.32 from her account at a township credit union.

Robbery: A Youngstown man, 22, reportedly stole a set of audio cables from Walmart, 200 Goldie Road, shoved and slapped a loss-prevention official who tried to detain him and fled in a vehicle.

Weapon: After responding to a possible fight on Oakland Drive regarding a vehicle, authorities charged 20-year-old Braylon W. Black of Hanley Avenue, Youngstown, with one felony count each of receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and being a convicted felon with a firearm. Found in the car was a loaded .44-caliber firearm that had been stolen in Youngstown, police said.

Feb. 29

Arrest: Authorities went to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to arrest 43-year-old Gregory L. Davenport of Northview Drive, Youngstown. He was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court.

Theft: A Trumbull Court woman noticed someone had stolen some of her husband’s pain medication.

Arrest: Police in downtown Youngstown picked up 27-year-old Justin A. Maxwell of East Judson Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a township warrant charging failure to appear in court.

GIRARD

Feb. 28

Harassment: An East Second Street woman alleged her estranged husband sent and made disturbing, threatening and derogatory text messages and calls to her, including a threat to kill the accuser and her boyfriend.

Criminal mischief: A vehicle in the 600 block of Trumbull Court was found with all of its tires punctured and flattened.

Arrest: Police picked up Ryan M. Pezzulo as he was walking near Park Avenue and Dravis Street. Pezzulo, no information listed, was wanted on a Girard warrant.

Weapon: Police received a report that a man had accidentally shot himself in the leg while on Summit Street. He had a wound to his left calf area.

Feb. 29

Theft: A woman reported a jar containing about $100 in change was taken from her Park Avenue home.

Theft: An Ohio Avenue man discovered two leather jackets, a minibike, a small engine and other property missing from his residence.

Theft: A North Highland Avenue woman suspected an acquaintance had stolen her wallet.

March 1

Harassment: A Park Avenue man said he received such calls and text messages, including a challenge to fight the caller.

Drugs: Officers responded to a possible altercation between two people walking on Interstate 80, then cited 26-year-old Noah F. Thornton of South Market Street, Girard, and 31-year-old Karissa E. Kulcsar of Youngstown, on charges of walking on a roadway while intoxicated. Kulcsar also was charged with possession of drug-abuse instruments when, authorities alleged, a spoon with burn marks common in drug use and a syringe were in her purse.

Harassment: A North Highland Avenue woman told police a man had made at least 16 unwanted calls to her.
