NILES

As March 15 primary nears, the campaigns of the two Democratic presidential candidates are opening Mahoning Valley headquarters – 2 miles apart from each other.

The Hillary Clinton headquarters is at 337 Vienna Ave. in Niles; Bernie Sanders’ campaign office is at 950 Youngstown-Warren Road, also in Niles.

The Sanders headquarters will open at 6 p.m. today, according to Bob Haas, a campaign volunteer.

Called the “Bern Unit,” the office will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Clinton headquarters’ grand opening is 4:30 p.m. Saturday with a number of Democratic officials scheduled to attend.

Among those on the guest list are Ohio Senate Minority Leader Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd; state Rep. John Boccieri of Poland, D-59th; Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman David Betras; and Kathy DiCristofaro, chairwoman of the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus.

The office will be used as a “community hub” and “central gathering place” for Clinton’s supporters in the area, said Yianni Varonis, Hillary for Ohio spokesman.

“Hillary for Ohio’s new office represents our commitment to the Mahoning Valley and the well-being of its citizens,” he said.

None of the four Republican presidential candidates has campaign headquarters in the Valley. But the Mahoning County Republican Party has offered its headquarters at 621 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman for use by supporters of the candidates.
