What: Mahoning Valley Landscape & Nursery Association’s annual event offers seven speakers. From flowering trees and new varieties to turf disease updates, join us for the latest information in the landscape industry.

OSU Ext. master gardener training

When: Wednesdays, starting next week, to May 11, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What: Master gardener volunteers provide such educational services to their communities as: answering gardening questions from the public, conducting plant clinics, gardening activities with children, senior citizens, disabled.

Orchids of China

When: Next Thursday, 6–8 p.m.

What: Tom Sampliner, noted native flower photographer and native orchid specialist, will present a slideshow tour of his visit to China in 2015. A great number of orchids treated as houseplants in the Northeast U.S. grow naturally in various areas of China. Tom also will include scenery and sights of the areas he visited.

BIRD BANDING WITH AL EIBEL

When: March 13, 8 a.m.-noon

What: See live, wild songbirds in the hand and learn why bird banding is an important tool for bird and wildlife conservation.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva. Meet Al outside on the east side of the center.

Cost: Free

Details: Drop in any time between 8 and noon. Banding sessions are canceled in the event of rain.

NESTBOX WORKSHOP

When: March 13, 2-4 p.m.

What: Make a nesting box for local bird species such as bluebirds, chickadees and house wrens.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva, OH 44657

Cost: Free

Details: Bring your own hammer. All other materials will be provided. Registration limited to 15. One nestbox per family. Best for ages 8 to adult. Register by March 11.

Starting Seeds Indoors

When: Mar. 21, 9:30 a.m. to noon

What: Have coffee with the master gardeners and learn when to start your seeds indoors for outside plantings. Discussion will focus on the importance of using the correct growing medium, proper lighting and correct watering procedures for successful germination.
