Mahoning commissioners approve demo of building to make way for new dog shelter

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning County commissioners this morning approved a $20,400 agreement with All Excavating Co. of Youngstown for demolition of the former Jump Stretch fitness center, a house and a sign on the site where the county’s new dog shelter will be built.

Bids will be opened at 1:30 p.m. March 16 in the county purchasing office for construction of the new 14,000-square-foot, single-story dog shelter to be built at 1230 N. Meridian Road.

The new shelter, estimated to cost about $4 million, will have nearly double the capacity of the county’s current 43-year-old Industrial Road dog pound.

Groundbreaking for the new shelter will likely be in May, with the new building to be completed by year’s end, said James Fortunato, county purchasing director.

The new shelter was designed by Copich Architects of Liberty Township.

The commissioners also voted to advertise for bids for resurfacing of Sexton Street in Struthers.
