Zika exercise
Zika exercise
COLUMBUS
The Ohio Department of Health is conducting a Zika virus tabletop exercise at noon today to ensure Ohio’s readiness at the local and state levels prior to the 2016 mosquito season, which usually is from May to October.
During the exercise, representatives from several state agencies and boards, local health departments and health care provider associations will discuss Zika virus scenarios and readiness planning.
The Zika virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. There is no indication that it can spread from person to person through casual contact. The primary mosquito that transmits the Zika virus is found in the tropics and Southern U.S., but it is not established in Ohio. However, a “cousin” of the mosquito is found in Ohio and may transmit Zika virus.

Uterus transplant
CLEVELAND
A team of Cleveland Clinic transplant and gynecological surgeons performed the nation’s first uterus transplant during a nine-hour surgery last week. The 26-year-old patient, who was not identified, was in stable condition the day after the surgery. The transplanted uterus came from a deceased organ donor.
The Cleveland Clinic began screening candidates for uterus transplants late last year, as part of a clinical trial approved by Cleveland Clinic’s Institutional Review Board.
