Rep. Tim Ryan is seeking his eighth term in Congress
YOUNGSTOWN
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, running for his eighth term in Congress, is again being challenged in the Democratic primary by John Stephen Luchansky.
In the 2014 primary for the 13th Congressional District, Ryan, of Howland, beat Luchansky, of Boardman, by 70 percentage points.
If re-elected, Ryan said he will continue to focus on helping provide federal funding needed to revitalize his district, which includes most of Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
That money would continue toward the removal of blight and vacant homes, military bases, additive manufacturing and clean energy.
“I have worked closely with local officials and community leaders to advance local projects that enhance the economic competitiveness and help attract high-quality, high-paying jobs,” Ryan said.
Ryan said among his most-important votes were to cut taxes for small businesses, extend tax credits to help offset the cost of college tuition, and create a permanent extension of a research and development tax credit.
Ryan wants to continue the revitalization of cities through economic development initiatives; create jobs, especially in manufacturing; and work to stop “currency manipulation and [support] trade issues that hurt American workers.”
In addition to losing to Ryan in the 2014 Democratic primary, Luchansky ran as a write-in in the 2004 general election for the 6th Congressional District, getting 0.06 of 1 percent of the vote, and he finished last in the three-person 2006 Democratic primary for the 6th District with 11.3 percent of the vote.
As he has said in previous campaigns, Luchansky is running to conduct a congressional probe into a 1996 shooting of Doug Jones Jr. by a Poland village police officer. Ryan won’t call for one.
Luchansky also wants to block federal funding to Youngstown State University while Jim Tressel is president, but doesn’t explain why.
The winner will take on Republican Richard A. Morckel of Akron in the general election.
