Trumbull commissioners support removal of Mahoning River dam in Struthers

WARREN — The Trumbull County commissioners today approved a resolution giving their support to requests filed Friday by the city of Struthers and Western Reserve Port Authority for removal of a low-head dam on the Mahoning River in Struthers.

The city will apply to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for money through the Ohio Water Pollution Control Loan Fund’s Water Resource Restoration Sponsor Program.

The port authority will submit an Innovative Readiness Training Request for Military Assistance to the United States Department of Defense in order to partner with the United States Air Force Reserve base in Vienna to get help from reservists in removing the dam.

Removing the dam and sediment upstream of the dam will restore and protect aquatic habitats, the resolution says, adding the commissioners also support future Mahoning River-dam removals.
