Colts give QB Luck $140M extension
INDIANAPOLIS
Andrew Luck has signed the richest contract in NFL history, a deal worth up to $140 million with the Indianapolis Colts that covers the next six seasons through 2021.
Colts owner Jim Irsay revealed the contract’s maximum value on Wednesday for Luck, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft who missed nine games last year because of injuries to his shoulder, ribs and kidney. Irsay said Luck would be guaranteed $47 million if the Colts were to cut him before the season.
According to NFL.com, the life of Luck’s contract includes $87 million guaranteed for injury.
Devils acquire former No. 1 pick Taylor Hall
NEWARK, N.J.
The New Jersey Devils have acquired former No. 1 overall draft pick Taylor Hall from the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Adam Larsson.
The teams announced the trade Wednesday, two days before the start of free agency.
The trade gives the goal-starved Devils an exciting young left wing, who was the No. 1 pick overall in 2010.
The Oilers get a solid defenseman who was the No. 4 overall selection in 2011. They also get salary cap space to possibly sign free agent Milan Lucic with Hall’s $6 million annual salary heading to New Jersey.
Predators acquire Subban for Weber
NASHVILLE, TENN.
The Nashville Predators pulled off a blockbuster before the start of free agency Wednesday by acquiring P.K. Subban from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Shea Weber, a swap of All-Star defensemen.
Subban won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman in 2013 and had six goals and 45 assists last season before suffering an injury. The offensive-minded, dynamic 27-year-old has 63 goals and 215 assists in 434 career games, all with the Canadiens.
Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin said trading Subban is “one of the most difficult decisions” he has had to make.
Phelps, Franklin qualify for Olympics
OMAHA, Neb.
Michael Phelps is heading back to the Olympics.
So is Missy Franklin.
Phelps, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history, held off a stiff challenge from Tom Shields to win the 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. swimming trials Wednesday night. Phelps whipped around to look at his time — a bit slower than he probably would’ve liked — and held up all five fingers on his right hand.
Yep, it’s Olympics No. 5, making him the first male swimmer to compete in that many Summer Games.
Franklin, meanwhile, turned in one of the gutsiest performances of her career to earn a spot for Rio in the 200 freestyle. One night after she struggled to seventh in the 100 backstroke — an event she won four years ago in London — there was plenty of speculation that she’d be hard-pressed to qualify for any individual events at these games.
Weather forces CWS final to be postponed
OMAHA, Neb.
The College World Series championship game between Coastal Carolina and Arizona has been postponed until today because of inclement weather.
NCAA officials waited 2 hours, 23 minutes after the scheduled start time to postpone the game.
