2 Mahoning County residents test positive for Zika virus

YOUNGSTOWN — Two Mahoning County residents recently tested positive for the Zika virus, the Mahoning County District Board of Health announced in a news release today.

The board of health reportedly was notified of the cases by the Ohio Department of Health.

Both area residents recently traveled to countries where the virus, which is spread by infected mosquitoes, is prevalent.

“The species of mosquitoes that carries the Zika virus is not known to be present in Ohio. These local cases are not a threat to the public health of residents in Mahoning County,” said health commissioner Patricia Sweeney in the release.
