“The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) opens Friday in theaters, and it’s just the latest

“The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) opens Friday in theaters, and it’s just the latest movie based on the strange children’s literature of Roald Dahl, the late British author. Here are five other Dahl stories that have been made into films (usually more than once), and in some cases, Broadway musicals:

v “James and the Giant Peach”: 1961

v “The Fantastic Mr. Fox”: 1970

v “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”: 1965

v “Danny, the Champion of the World”: 1975, the book that first introduced the BFG character

v “Matilda”: 1988

“American Gothic” (10 p.m., CBS): On “American Gothic,” a new suspect emerges in the Silver Bells Killer case. We suspect he or she won’t be the last one.

The musical stage adaptation of the 1997 animated musical film “Anastasia” will land on Broadway starring Christy Altomare, Derek Klena, John Bolton and Caroline O’Connor.

The show has its world premiere at Hartford Stage in Connecticut this year and will play the Broadhurst Theatre starting in April. The new work reunites much of the creative team behind “Ragtime” – book writer Terrence McNally, composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens. Darko Tresnjak, who directed “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” will direct “Anastasia.”

The story centers on the Russian czar’s youngest daughter, who escapes the night her family is killed and lives as a peasant before remembering who she is.
