Markets Right Now: US stocks open broadly higher

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening broadly higher on Wall Street as global markets continue to recover following Britain’s vote to make a break with the European Union.

Banks, materials stocks and energy companies all posted gains in early trading Wednesday. General Electric was up 2 percent, the most in the Dow Jones industrial average.

European markets also posted solid gains and the pound edged up against the dollar following its plunge after the British vote last week.

At 9:45, a.m., the Dow was up 121 points, or 0.7 percent, to 17,525.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 15 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,052. The Nasdaq composite climbed 42 points, or 0.9 percent, to 4,735.
