NBA, WNBA the first leagues in pride parade

NEW YORK

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and WNBA President Lisa Borders marched in New York City’s pride parade Sunday.

The two leagues became the first pro sports organization to have a float in the parade.

Silver and deputy commissioner Mark Tatum both wore “(hash)OrlandoUnited” shirts to show their support for victims of the night club attack earlier this month.

The NBA and WNBA have done a lot to try and help victims of the Orlando shooting. From financial donations to blood drives and silent auctions, the WNBA and its players have been lending their support to those affected by the massacre.

Former NBA player Jason Collins, who became the first openly gay player to play in the league, was also on the float along with other representatives from the two organizations.

Silver has discussed the possibility that the NBA could move its All-Star Game from Charlotte, North Carolina next year due to a law that limits anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people.

Phelps drops from 200 freestyle for Olympics

OMAHA, Neb.

Michael Phelps is dropping the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. swimming trials, leaving the 18-time Olympic gold medalist with four events.

Phelps said Sunday night that he won’t compete in the 200 free preliminaries Monday. He didn’t swim Sunday on the opening night of the eight-day meet that determines the U.S. team for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

That means his first event in Omaha will be the 200 butterfly Tuesday. Phelps earned silver in the event four years ago in London.

Besides the 200 fly, his remaining events at trials will be 100 fly, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley.
