Malaysian woman dies after airbag ruptures in accident

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia

A Malaysian safety official says a woman has died after the airbag in her Honda Civic ruptured in a minor collision.

The incident Sunday came days after Honda Malaysia announced an additional recall of more than 145,000 vehicles to replace defective front passenger airbag inflators.

Fire and rescue official Rosdi Hainan said Monday that the steering-wheel airbag had ruptured when he arrived at the site of the accident, and the victim was bleeding from her chest. Rosdi says the woman died a short time later.

Roller coaster in Scotland derails

MOTHERWELL, Scotland

Police say a roller coaster derailed and crashed at a theme park in Scotland, injuring eight children and two adults.

The accident occurred Sunday afternoon at the M & D’s theme park at Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell.

Police Scotland Chief Inspector David Bruce told reporters at the theme park that five gondolas on the Tsunami roller coaster ride detached from the rails as they rounded a bend, struck the superstructure and fell about 20 feet to the ground. The ride can reach speeds of up to 40 mph.

4 injured after car plunges off cliff

SMOCK, Pa.

Authorities say a woman and three children were seriously injured after the car they were in swerved off a Pennsylvania cliff and plunged 150 feet.

State police in Fayette County say the 58-year-old woman on a road in the village of Smock about 10:45 a.m. Sunday with three girls age 10, 12 and 13.

Police said she became “distracted” while going around a left bend and swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle. The vehicle plunged off the cliff, striking several trees before landing and flipping over.

Police said all four occupants sustained “major injuries.” None was wearing a seat belt. The woman was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, the oldest girl to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, and the other girls to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Fourteen injured in firetruck collision

NEW YORK

Fire officials say 14 people, including two firefighters, sustained serious injuries when a firetruck collided with a bus and a car.

The collision occurred shortly after noon Sunday in Queens.

The fire engine was responding to a call of a fire.

Those injured were taken to area hospitals. Officials say the injuries are not life-threatening.

Unknown sheen in Lake Ontario probed

SCRIBA, N.Y.

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an unknown sheen in Lake Ontario.

Officials responded Sunday to a report of a sheen in Lake Ontario near the Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Scriba, New York, about 40 miles north of Syracuse.

A Coast Guard Auxiliary air crew had noticed it during a flight and reported it. The cause is unknown.

The Coast Guard says it has set up a temporary safety zone extending two miles to the north and two miles to the east and west from the power plant.

A boat crew has taken samples of the sheen, and is enforcing the safety zone.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation also is on the scene.
