Tamir Rice estate requests approval of $5.5M settlement

CLEVELAND

The estate of Tamir Rice has requested that a Cuyahoga County Probate Court judge approve a settlement reached over the 12-year-old’s 2014 shooting death by Cleveland police.

Cleveland.com reports more than a third of the $5.5 million that the estate would receive will go toward paying attorneys and expenses.

Rice’s mother and sister each stand to gain $250,000.

Judge Anthony Russo has yet to set a hearing date on the matter. He must sign off on the agreement because Rice did not have a will.

The application to approve the estate’s portion of the settlement was filed last week.

Rice was fatally shot by Officer Timothy Loehmann at the Cudell Recreation Center on Nov. 22, 2014.

A grand jury declined to indict Loehmann or his partner last December.
