Austintown Middle School’s annual Career Day was hosted on May 20 for the students in eighth grade.

The PTA at Austintown Middle School helped put Career Day together and brought in 29 presenters with different job occupations for the students to visit. The event happens every Spring to help the students prepare for their transition into high school. The Career Day is incorporated into school’s curriculum.

Each of the presenters are given a classroom to set up everything they need to present to the students. The students spend a certain amount of time with each presenter before they went to another presenter’s room.

Some of the presenters the PTA brought in were a surgeon, a physical therapist, an airline pilot, a dog groomer and several more. Many of the presenters prepared a PowerPoint or brought in objects pertaining to their jobs. The PTA members invite people they know who may be interested in presenting. Several of the presenters are people who have come in the past and are willing to continue coming to help the students.

“We try and get a very diversified group,” said Lynn Mickey, the PTA member who organized Career Day.

The students are encouraged to dress the part, like they are going in for a job interview. Many of the students said the presenters they listen to help them become prepared for the working world. The students also get an idea of what type of career they might want to pursue in the future.

“I liked the counselors, the elementary school counselors,” said Lexie Larson, an eighth-grade student who wants to follow a career path working with children.

“A lot of them talked about how to have a good work ethic,” said Cooper Smith, an eighth-grade student who wants to pursue a career in ministry.

The entire day is planned out for students to learn about different career paths, how to have a good work ethic and to get prepared for moving into high school and looking for their first job.

“We could not to it without the PTA, they did everything. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful group of parents that are actively involved in the schools. It certainly takes all involved, home, schools, kids, to make this stuff work and we are very blessed to have the PTA that we do,” said John Hudson, eighth-grade counselor at Austintown Middle School.
