Chicken dinner to be July 7

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield is having a drive through chicken dinner on July 7 until it is sold out. The menu will include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Chair yoga

Hosted by the Friends of PLYMC. Pay as you attend at $10 per class. Dress comfortably. Class will meet every Friday in July at the Canfield library from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. This event is for adults.

Library closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Independence Day on July 4.

Get walking at your library

Get fit at the library every Monday through Aug. 15 at 8:30 a.m. for a 30 minute walk around the Canfield library neighborhood. Check in with the librarian at 8:30, walk on your own or with a friend for 30 minutes, and check back in at 9 a.m. to log your progress. Make new friends and join the fun. This event is for adults.

Blood pressure check

The Canfield library will host a blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association on July 20 from 1-2 p.m.

Nonfiction book club

If you think that “truth is stranger than fiction,” drop in on the Canfield library’s nonfiction book club. The book you read is your choice. Linger over a hot cup of tea while chatting about what you are reading. This event is for adults on July 5 at 6 p.m.

Kennsington Golf Club hosts food drive

CTW Development Corp. and Kennsington Golf Club and Grille have teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley to host a food drive at the golf course from June 6 to June 27. To motivate community participation, anyone who brings food or monetary donations to the course’s ProShop, located in Canfield’s Westford Community at 4171 Westford Place, can enter to win one of three prizes.

Basic computer class

Learn very basic computer skills. This is a beginner’s class that will cover use of a mouse, computer terms and simple Internet use. Space is limited. Call 330-744-8636 to register and specify Canfield library branch and Basic Computer Class. This class is for adults on July 11 at 11 a.m.

The library partners with SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business, in presenting this seminar. Are you thinking about starting a business in the near future or further down the road? Members of SCORE will address key topics for those considering beginning a business: start-up considerations, marketing, finances and technology for business. The Business and Investment Center librarian will discuss the library’s sources and services for business start-up and beyond. Want to learn how to decorate cupcakes like a pro? Here’s your chance to experiment with different frosting tips and learn great decorating techniques. Coloring for grown-ups

Come join the Canfield library and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only. This event will be hosted July 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Teens, create your own 3-D action figure

Join the Canfield library to customize your own 3-D action figure. Augment the design, choose a color and print. Registration for the program is required and is open to tweens and teens between the ages of 9 and 17. The limit is 12 participants. Incredible unforgettable Bug Lab

Dr. Insecta will introduce participants to a fascinating array of live insects during his informative and entertaining show. This event is for children of all ages and will be hosted by the Canfield library on July 23 at 2 p.m.

“Recycle Every Day”

Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis as they present Nancy Elizabeth Wallace’s “Recycle Every Day” during the Summer Reading Program. After reading the story, program participants will create bouquets using recovered materials. At the conclusion of the program, children will receive an environmental action activity book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades Pre-K through 3 and will be hosted by the Canfield library on July 25 at 10 a.m.

Comedy and juggling

Matt Jergens will keep you laughing and tapping your toes to some great tunes while he uses a variety of props to defy gravity in a way never before seen. This event is for children of all ages, hosted by the Canfield library on July 13 at 11 a.m.

Across the finish line

Come and cheer on Pete the Cat. Join the library for stories, games and fun for children of all ages. Don’t forget to bring your camera and have your picture taken with the cool and groovy Pete the Cat. The Canfield library will host this event on July 26 at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be served.

“The Great Escape”

Do you have what it takes to solve a series of riddles and puzzles, decipher the clues and find the key to get free from our escape room? Do you have the brainpower and teamwork skills needed to win? Come to the Canfield library on July 21 at 6 p.m. and find out if you’re ready for the Great Escape. This event is for teens in grades 7-12, and adults are welcome.

Canfield High School spirit store now online

The Spirit Wear Store at Canfield High School is now accepting online orders. The store is fully operated by students in the Introduction to Business class in cooperation with Junior Achievement. Host families needed for Northern Ireland teens

The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. Founded in 1975, the program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The group is searching for host families for two boys from Northern Ireland. Teens will arrive on June 27 and will depart on July 27. The host family should have a male teen between the ages of 14 and 17. This life-changing experience includes six service projects (Purple Cat, Potential Development, Mill Creek Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Jubilee Gardens and Zion Lutheran Food Bank) as well as many fun events, such as a Scrappers Game, a road rally and a trip to Cedar Point to name a few. First Night Youngstown announces annual button design competition

First Night Youngstown is calling for local and regional artists to participate in the annual design competition of its New Year’s Eve events admission button. The winning artist will be promoted at all press events. The artist will also be a celebrity guest in the Downtown Christmas holiday parade and tree-lighting event. The button series is traditionally intended to celebrate downtown Youngstown’s unique historic buildings and architecture. Buttons may be designed using any medium and then digitally saved as a .jpeg. Artists should depict Youngstown in a manner that highlights New Year’s Eve, no champagne glasses or images of drinking alcohol; First Night events are family-friendly. The design must include the phrase “First Night Youngstown 2017.” Interested artists should call 330-744-9966 or email firstnightyoungstown@gamil.com. Submission deadline is Aug. 31. Each year, admission buttons provide entry to all First Night events on New Year’s Eve in downtown Youngstown, sold at $5 and $10 each. Proceeds from the sale help compensate performers.

Canfield Historical Society to present open house

The Canfield Historical Society will be presenting the Fowler Ford Open House at the Mahoning Dispatch Museum on the Green on June 25 from 2-6 p.m. The open house will showcase automobile advertising in the Mahoning Dispatch historic newspapers and will include guided tours of the museum itself. Antique car owners are invited to park their cars across the street and enjoy free admission to the Mahoning Dispatch Museum open house. A donation of $5 per person is requested for all others attending the open house and goes toward supporting the non-profit Canfield Historical Society. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be hosted at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 18. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Get “golf ready”

Learn everything you’ll need to play golf in just a few lessons. PGA pros will show you ways to play by combining fun, friends and fitness. Each session will focus on various golf skills. Mix and match clinics available. One day clinic - $25, any two clinics - $45, any three clinics - $60 and any seven clinics - $100. Dates for the program vary through Aug. 17.

Advanced Master Gardener series

This series, led by Ellen Speicher, will focus on pruning, plant names and fall gardening. The event will be hosted by Fellows Riverside Gardens on Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. The deadline for registration has passed.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.

East High class of 1966 reunion

The East High class of 1966 has begun making plans for their 50th reunion. They are looking for up-to-date addresses from all classmates who would like to attend. The event is planned for Sept. 2 from 6-10 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Hall on the East Side. There will be a buffet dinner and music provided by a DJ. The cost to attend is $40 per person.
