Arrested in abuse of wife

Officers arrested a man after he was accused of abusing his wife of 27 years over an argument about his pension.

According to police reports, Donald Vath, 56, of Kenmar Court, grabbed his wife by the arms, yelled at her and spat in her face during an argument Monday on Kenmar. Officers said Vath’s wife had visible bruises on her arms

A witness said Vath told his wife he would kill her before she gets any of his pension, reports said. When officers asked Vath if he said it, he confirmed that statement.

Police charged him with domestic violence. He has a hearing at 1 p.m. Monday hearing at Mahoning County Area Court.

Walmart bomb threat

LIBERTY

The Walmart Supercenter at Goldie Road and Belmont Avenue in the Liberty Plaza was closed for about 31/2 hours Wednesday night because of a bomb threat.

According to the Trumbull 911 Center, a bomb threat was called into the store at 6:09 p.m., causing the store to be evacuated.

Personnel from Liberty and Youngstown State University police departments’ bomb-sniffing dogs searched the facility and found no bomb.

The last police and fire units left Walmart at 9:23 p.m. and the store reopened, officials said.

Trustees reject bids for cold-storage barn

Township trustees unanimously rejected the bids for the construction of the cold-storage barn at a special meeting Wednesday evening.

The trustees plan to re-evaluate, adjust and rebid the contract at a later date.

“We don’t want to spend that much money, basically, on a cold-storage building,” Trustee Thomas Costello said.

The estimated price was $427,000, but the three bids submitted at the last meeting June 13 exceeded that estimate. The bids were $479,500, $597,000 and $598,000.

Child-porn case

CLEVELAND

A federal grand jury has indicted a 56-year-old East Liverpool man on charges of receiving visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and possession of child pornography, the U.S. Attorney said.

According to the indictment, Donald Guthrie Jr. received numerous computer files which contained such depictions between June and August 2014.

On Nov. 6, 2015, Guthrie possessed a computer that contained child pornography, according to the indictment.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cleveland office.

Closed road in Howland

HOWLAND

Howland-Wilson Road between Kensington Lane and Woodhill Circle in the township will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today for a culvert replacement. The recommended detour route is west on Squire Lane, north on state Route 46, east on King Graves Road and south on Howland-Wilson.

Warrant in girl’s rape

YOUNGSTOWN

A judge has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a 22-year-old Campbell man charged with raping a 12-year-old girl in his residence.

Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court issued the warrant for Paris L. Wright, also known as Paris Gray, of Whipple Avenue, after he failed to appear for a Wednesday pretrial hearing.

Wright, whose jury trial is to begin Monday, faces a possible life prison term if he’s convicted of the crime, which police say occurred between June 1 and Aug. 31, 2012.

Judge Sweeney revoked Wright’s bond and ordered him jailed without bond until further notice.

Teen reports beating

Police are searching for two suspects charged with felonious assault outside a victim’s apartment Tuesday night on Huntington Drive, according to a police report.

The 18-year-old victim reportedly went outside the apartment to meet with the suspects when one of them pulled a gun on him. The victim reportedly struggled with the suspects until they put him in a choke hold and beat him in the head and face with the gun.

The victim’s other friend arrived on the scene as the victim called for help and the suspects fled. The victim told police he doesn’t know where the suspects live.

‘Day Out with Daddy’

The Trumbull County Fatherhood Initiative, Ohio Commission on Fatherhood, Trumbull County Children Services and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan are teaming up for a “Day Out with Daddy Party” from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the ACOP Center, 2501 Niles Road SE.

All dads, uncles, grandfathers, father figures, male role models and male mentors and their kids and teens are welcome to attend. Guests will receive health information from local health experts, a healthy meal, fun activities and a chance to earn prizes.

Crews contain fire

YOUNGSTOWN

Fire crews early Wednesday managed to contain a fire to the front porch of a 2020 Elm St. home. Crews that were called at about 2:30 a.m. found a fire on the front porch, which they were able to quickly put out. Reports said there was a strong odor of an accelerant on the front porch.

Damage is listed at $1,000. There were no injuries.

Grant for New Castle

NEW CASTLE, PA.

State Rep. Chris Sainato of New Castle, D-9th, on Wednesday announced the city was approved for a state grant to prepare a storm-water management plan. The city will receive $123,600 from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The grant was approved under the provisions of the Municipalities Financial Recovery Act (Act 47).
