The school board approved $9,240,242 in estimated spending for the school district for the next three months.

The school district is required to set temporary appropriations for the first 90 days of the new fiscal year, which begins July 1; the board then will approve permanent appropriations for fiscal year 2017 in early October.

In other business at a Monday board meeting, Superintendent David Janofa touted a roughly $10,000-per-year savings to the district on a contract with the business that provides athletic training for student athletes.

After the board’s approval of a $12,791 contract with Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates Ltd. for the 2016-17 school year, Janofa noted that the district previously paid about $23,000 per school year to the group. The district athletic director was able to negotiate a lower cost for the same services, Janofa said.

The school board approved a number of personnel items Monday, including a three-year contract for a new district director of instruction and student services. Karen Kanotz, who previously worked for Tallmadge schools, will fill the role effective Aug. 1. Janofa expressed excitement over Kanotz’s hiring, as did Kanotz.

“I’m ready to be a bulldog,” she said.

Kanotz will earn roughly $94,000 per year for each year of her contract, Janofa said.

The board also approved renewed three-year certified administrative contracts for high-school assistant principal Jeremy Gondol and Union Elementary Principal Michael Masucci, and a two-year noncertified administrative contract for food service director Barb Walko.

Janofa personally welcomed two new hires whose contracts were approved by the board Monday: school nurse Holly Lefoer and varsity wrestling coach Michael Mrakovich. Lefoer is a certified staff member; Mrakovich was hired under a supplemental contract.

The board also approved a $1,105,109 contract with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center for the 2016-17 school year. The ESC provides a number of services to school districts in the county, such as special-education services.
