Cardinal Joint Fire District fire board members selected Parillo Builders of Girard as the construction company to build Fire Station 3 on Herbert Road.
Marie Cartwright, fire board member and Canfield Township trustee, said Parillo Builders gave the board the best bid of $2.8 million, which will be adjusted after the board agrees on money-saving changes.
She said during Thursday’s board meeting members went through the bid, line-by-line to see where they could save.
“In doing that, we are getting the cost to where we need it to be,” said Canfield Councilman and fire board president John Morvay.
At a previous meeting, Morvay said the fire station’s total cost was projected to be $2.5 million. The funding comes from a 1.25-mill levy, generating $627,854 annually, passed in 2014.
Some of the changes that will be incorporated into the new estimate, one members hope to be closer to the original estimate, will include flooring and signage being contracted to local vendors.
“It will be very substantial savings,” he said.
Cartwright said Canfield homeowners also will be saving on insurance costs and fire department response times with the addition of the new station.
“We all know whether it’s a heart attack or some sort of injury, the quicker the response the better the prospect,” she said.
Cartwright said she is confident Parillo Builders will break ground soon.
“We are about ready to give everyone the green light to go,” Morvay said.
