Former Vandy football player convicted

Nashville, tenn.

A jury has convicted a former Vanderbilt football player on all counts after finding that he encouraged his teammates to rape an unconscious woman he had been dating. It took jurors a little more than four hours of deliberation before finding Brandon Vandenburg guilty on five counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery. In addition, he was convicted of one count of unlawful photography.

Nashville Police became involved after Vanderbilt officials contacted them when security camera footage at the school showed players carrying an unconscious woman in a dorm room.

Vandenburg and Cory Batey were convicted last year on multiple counts of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual battery. The verdicts, however, were thrown out after it was revealed that a juror had not disclosed that he had been a victim of statutory rape.

Batey was convicted again in April. Both he and Vandenburg face a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison for aggravated rape with no possibility of parole.

US Soccer red card appeals denied

houston

The U.S. Soccer Federation’s appeals of a red card given to midfielder Jermaine Jones and a yellow card assessed to forward Bobby Wood have been dismissed.

The decision Sunday will leave the U.S. without both players Tuesday night for the Copa America semifinal against Argentina in Houston.

Jones was given the red card Thursday night in the quarterfinals by Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan during a 52nd-minute confrontation that also saw Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia sent off after a second yellow card for a harsh tackle on Alejandro Bedoya. U.S. players immediately rushed to the scrum after Valencia’s tackle, and Jones raised an arm at Michael Arroyo.

Jim McMahon advocates NFL pot use

New york

Former Chicago Bears Super Bowl winning quarterback Jim McMahon advocated medicinal marijuana use as an alternative for pain management.

McMahon spoke at the Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo saying marijuana “is not only an effective painkiller, but it is also safer than the opioid painkillers that have destroyed thousands of American families.”

McMahon, who was diagnosed with early onset dementia and other brain issues that have had links to concussions, believes marijuana has helped him cope with his pain.

“Hundreds of thousands of people are dying from [painkillers], and there’s not one case of people dying from the hemp plant,” McMahon said.

The conference included professionals in the marijuana industry.
