Summer day camp planned by society

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will explore local history and culture in “My Town, Your Town, Youngstown” summer day camp from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 27-July 1 at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, 325 W. Federal St.

The camp for age 7 to 14 will cover Mahoning Valley people and events that shaped the area.

Participants will learn about first inhabitants through the pioneer settlement, rise and fall of the iron and steel industries, and emergence of Youngstown as a cultural and business center.

Field trips to area landmarks and a focus on Youngstown yesterday, today and tomorrow will highlight the week.

Space is limited; registration required; cost is $90 for MCHS members and $100 for nonmembers.

‘Hollerin’ contest’ is gist of play

Kent State University at Trumbull Summer Stock, 4324 Mahoning Ave. NW, will present Jonathan Fitts’ “The Greater Watauga County Annex’s 17th Annual Hollerin’ Contest” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. next Sunday.

The play, set in the Blue Mountains, is directed by Jim Canacci, associate lecturer, Kent Trumbull. Fitts, playwright, will attend the first night.
