JCL to present scholarships to nine area graduates

The Junior Civic League will present college scholarships to nine local high school graduates at its annual brunch which will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave. Tickets are $20 each.
The Rev. Dr. Lewis W. Macklin II, lead pastor of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker. He has served as president of local boards and chairman of district organizations. Rev. Macklin also has been recognized for community leadership by the Youngstown State University Office of Diversity, has been co-convener emeritus of the Rev. Martin Luther King planning committee and is chairman of the African American Male Wellness Walk of the Mahoning Valley. He is a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and is a previous Junior Civic League Scholarship recipient. He also earned a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in gerontology from YSU, and obtained a master of arts degree and doctorate from Southern Bible Seminary and Institute, Augusta, Ga.
The program will include a praise dance by Daughters of Bethel and installation of officers for 2016-2018. Officers to be installed are Frances Curd, president; Carla Baldwin, vice president; Sylvia Rupert, treasurer; Jeanine Baker, financial secretary; Bea Baker, recording secretary; Trina McCain, corresponding secretary; Jenita Gillespie, parliamentarian; Jerrine King, chaplain; Christine Hennings, historian; and Veronica Crafter-Srinivasan, public relations/reporter.
The league has awarded more than $538,800 in scholarships since its inception. Scholarships are based on academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and personal qualities and strengths. The Cinderella Ball Scholarship recipients are Myra Corley, Boardman High School, $2,500, Miss Cinderella; Courtney Teague, Ursuline, $1,800, first attendant; and Seaven Weaver, Austintown Fitch, $1,500, second attendant. Other scholarships of $1,500 will be given to Carlos Herriott II and Marquett Samuels, Austintown Fitch; and Emma Mitchell, Heaven Pough and Ja-Mira Smith, Warren G. Harding.
