Historical society plans fundraiser

Canfield Historical Society has launched a fundraising campaign to restore the facade of the Mahoning Dispatch Museum on the Green, an 1865 structure. This event “Fowler Ford” open house, will be from 2 to 6 p.m. June 25 at the museum, 21 S. Broad St. It is in memory of Ralph Fowler who owned one of the first Ford dealerships in Canfield and was third generation publisher of the Mahoning Dispatch newspaper.

There will be tours of the museum, which was established in 1877 as the area’s weekly newspaper and was in operation for 91 years. The interior of the building has remained virtually untouched, as have the four historic machines still on site, which include at Linotype, a Heidelberg Windmill, a Platen Press and the newpaper’s oldest press, a Campbell Flat Bed.

There also will be a display of six decades of automobile advertising from the Mahoning Dispatch newspaper, 1910 through the 1960s.

Classic and antique car owners are invited to take a car to show and will receive free admission to the museum. A $5 donation will be requested to help in the restoration efforts. The event is appropriate for all ages to enjoy.

The fundraising efforts will continue in the fall with a Memory Walk, “Canfield through the Years”. This living history walk is slated for Sept. 24 and Oct. 8. More information will follow.
