Hitchcock Woods Daycare hosted a bike safety day on May 24 for the children.

This year was the 33rd annual Bike Day for Hitchcock Woods Daycare. The children started in the morning, learning how to be safe while riding a bike. They learned things like making sure to wear a helmet, not riding in the street, being aware of the surroundings and more.

The children brought their own helmets to wear and bikes to ride. The older children and younger children divided into groups and took turns riding their bikes around the parking lot. The teachers and children created a small town out of cardboard boxes. There was a McDonald’s, a post office, a grocery store, a gas station and a few other places. The children would get off their bikes and pretended to go in the buildings or pump gas into their bikes.

“I liked the McDonald’s and getting to wear my new helmet,” said Brendan Witt, one of the children who attends Hitchcock Woods.

Everyone took turns riding their bikes to make sure there wasn’t too much traffic and the children wouldn’t bump into each other. When the children took a break, they enjoyed a snack and then went back outside to ride their bikes.

“We do this to promote things like health, well-being and safety. It’s almost the end of the year so it’s like a celebration too,” said Abbey Loree, caregiver at Hitchcock Woods Daycare.
