Beer to be sold at College World Series

omaha, neb.

The beer taps will be open to the general public for the first time at the College World Series starting Saturday, part of a one-year trial that could lead to alcohol sales at more NCAA championship events.

The NCAA’s decision to allow beer and wine sales in all seating areas at TD Ameritrade Park was made primarily in response to requests from fans and stadium officials and secondarily for the creation of a new revenue stream, managing director of championships and alliances Ron Prettyman told The Associated Press.

With beers selling for $6 and $7 and wine for $8 and $9, and assuming attendance matches last year’s average of 22,000 per game, some $1 million in new revenue would be generated if the CWS went the maximum 17 games. Andersen said alcohol profits would be divided among the NCAA and other CWS stakeholders according to a pre-determined formula.

ESPN adds Craig Sager to NBA Finals coverage

CLEVELAND

Craig Sager is going to work his first NBA Finals game.

The longtime sideline reporter has been added to ESPN’s broadcast team for Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. Sager, who has worked for Turner Sports for 34 years, will share sideline reporting duties with Doris Burke on ABC’s broadcast.

Sager, who has long been one of the league’s most revered personalities, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014. He says the invitation to join the broadcast “is a great honor.”

In a video released Wednesday by ESPN announcing the move, Burke told Sager: “Welcome to our team. It’s our honor.”

Rockies cut SS Reyes, eat $34 million

DENVER

Rather than activate Jose Reyes following his domestic violence suspension, the Colorado Rockies cut the shortstop on Wednesday and almost certainly will be responsible for the $34 million remaining on his contract.

Reyes completed a 59-day suspension on May 31 for violating Major League Baseball’s new domestic violence policy, then went on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment that was limited to 14 days.

Colorado reinstated the four-time All-Star from the restricted list on Wednesday and immediately designated him for assignment, giving the Rockies 10 days to trade Reyes or release him.
