Historical society features tours

SALEM

Salem Historical Society continues to offer Underground Railroad tours on the Quakertown Trolley. The next two tours will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. June 26.

The docent, dressed as a Salem Quaker, will take passengers back to the year 1856. Through stories, the travelers will get a better understanding of the plight of slaves, the working of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement that flourished in Salem prior to the Civil War.

Since the homes are private, a slide presentation will show the insides of the homes, the Underground Railroad hiding places and several abolitionists who lived in or visited them. They will help clarify the historical information presented during the program.

The tour will last approximately 75 minutes and will cost $15 per person. A minimum of 15 participants is necessary to conduct the tour.

Call 330-337-6733 for reservations or e-mail trolley239@aol.com to schedule a tour. Leave a message. Tours are subject to cancellation if participants are too few.
