Columbiana hires new boys basketball coach

COLUMBIANA

Todd Johnson will be the new Columbiana High boys basketball coach, the school announced on Tuesday.

Johnson is a 2001 Columbiana graduate. He spent the past three years as an assistant coach at Lisbon High.

“As an alumni, I am excited to build on the tradition of Columbiana basketball,” Johnson said in a statement. “We want our kids learning the fundamentals of the game at an early age and playing through their elementary years so when they start junior high, the boys will have a good grasp on the fundamentals of the game.”

The Clippers went 8-15 this past season.

Cortland 10 Miler scheduled Saturday

CORTLAND

The Cortland 10 Miler sponsored by the Cortland-Bazetta Optimists will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Lakeview High School. Registration will be at 8:30 a.m.

Mooney football camp will be July 1-2

YOUNGSTOWN

Mooney’s annual Football Camp of Champions will be on July 1–2.

This year’s camp coaches are: Bo Pelini (head coach, Youngstown State University), Tim Beck (offensive coordinator, The Ohio State University), Carl Pelini (defensive coordinator, Youngstown State University), Reno Ferri (Tight Ends Coach, University of Syracuse).

Guest speakers will include former Cleveland Browns Bernie Kosar and Greg Pruitt.

Now in its 16th year, this two-day event is for children in grades three-eight. Coaches, players and ex-players are on hand every year to help out the Cardinal Mooney football staff instruct the nearly 250 campers.

Orewiler, Root lead OJC’s opening round

ASHLAND

In the first round of the Ohio Junior Championship at Ashland Golf Course on Tuesday, Coden Orewiler of Waldo and Davis Root of Dublin each shot a two-round score of 71 to finish atop the leaderboard.

Jared Wilson (Columbiana), Luke Wells (Springfield) and Michael Prebles (Liberty) notched 72s for a third-place tie.

The final round is set for today at Ashland Golf Course.

Poland’s Jacobson shoots 73 in NOPGA

In the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf series at Windmill Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday, Zachary Jacobson of Poland shot a two-round score of 73 (36,37) for a second-place finish.

Anthony Panepento of Wooster took first place with a 72.

Neumeister takes first in NCJT

CHAGRIN FALLS

Kaylee Neumeister of Cortland won the Girls 16-19 age division of the North Coast Junior Tour on Tuesday at Tanglewood. She shot a two-round score of 77 (38,39) to do so.

Harding’s Johnson to join Vincennes (JC)

Shakem Johnson, a 2016 Warren Harding graduate, will continue his basketball career at Vincennes University (Ind.) next fall, Raiders head coach Andy Vlajkovich announced on his Twitter account Tuesday.

Johnson is a 6-foot-7 forward and was a starter for Warren Harding, which won a Division I district title in 2015-16.

Vincennes is a junior college. Vlajkovich described the Blazers as, “One of the best junior colleges in the nation” in Tuesday’s tweet.
