Beeghly Oaks Center for Rehabilitation and Healing, 6505 Market St., seeks volunteers to help its residents and staff create a “living, breathing American flag” at 3 p.m. today.

To celebrate the Flag Day holiday, a 22-by-30-foot flag will be assembled using yards of red, white and blue material. The Beeghly residents, staff, family and guests will hold up the pieces to create the flag. Volunteers are needed and are asked to come dressed in red, white and blue.

The flag will be created at the Beeghly Oaks main entrance. The center is on the campus of Akron-Children’s Hospital Boardman at the Southern Boulevard entrance.

An aerial photo of the flag presentation will be taken at 4 p.m. Refreshments and entertainment will follow.

Crash injures 1 person

UNITY

A Columbiana County crash left one person injured Monday afternoon.

A Jeep and commercial tractor-trailer collided head-on near the center line of state Route 14, east of Macklin Road in the township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Gregory Carberry, 56, of Brookville, Pa., who was driving the Jeep, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

The truck driver, Randy Sprouse, 63, of East Liverpool, was not injured. The OSHP continues its investigation.

2 fires at vacant house

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said crews extinguished fires Saturday twice at the same vacant 39 N. Truesdale Ave. house.

Firefighters were first there about 7:30 a.m., where they managed to put out a fire on the first floor. Reports said a side door was found open when crews arrived. Damage was listed at $3,000.

Crews were called back about 1:35 p.m., where they found a fire on the second floor. Reports said there was a strong smell of an accelerant on the second floor.

Damage in the second fire was listed at $5,100.

Woman found dead

WARREN

The cause and manner of death for a woman, 47, found dead at her home in the 1200 block of North Road is pending further studies by the Trumbull County Coroner’s Office.

Police were called to the home of Sandra Smith at 8:30 p.m. Friday by her father, who said Smith had not answered her door or phone in several days. Police broke open the front door and found Smith deceased in her bed.

Man flees, faces charges

BOARDMAN

A Youngstown man faces charges of receiving stolen property, obstructing official business and failure to comply after fleeing from police in a stolen car Saturday afternoon.

Police observed a 2012 Ford Escape reported stolen earlier that day, traveling on Southern Boulevard at 3:44 p.m.

When police attempted to stop the driver, a high-speed chase ensued through Meadowbrook Avenue, Argyle Avenue, Erie Street and Afton Avenue until the car struck a parked vehicle on Meadowbrook.

Jarrett Ortiz, 32, of Hazelton Avenue and a passenger, Nicholas Gianfrancesco, 26, of Market Street, Youngstown, fled. Officers used a police dog to help make the arrest.

The car belongs to a Thalia Avenue resident whose car and purse were missing at 1 a.m. after a burglary occurred at her home.

Gianfrancesco was charged with obstructing official business and released on summons, and Ortiz was transported to the Mahoning County jail.

No injuries in shooting

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said no one was injured Sunday after several shots were fired in the 100 block of Silliman Street.

A 32-year-old woman told police about 4:10 p.m. that shots were fired at her home after three men got out of their vehicles and fought with her boyfriend, a fight that stemmed from a previous fight Saturday on Avondale Avenue.

The woman said the men drove off, and one of them got out of his vehicle and fired several shots. Reports said police collected six shell casings.

Seeking cause of fire

YOUNGSTOWN

Investigators are searching for the cause of a fire that destroyed a shed early Sunday at a 707 Palmer Ave. home.

Firefighters were called about 5:05 a.m. to the South Side home, where they found the blaze had burned some siding on the house and destroyed lawn equipment inside the shed. Damage is listed at $5,000.

Woman’s assault trial

YOUNGSTOWN

Jury selection began Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a woman accused of assaulting a man more than five years ago at a Boardman restaurant.

The case against Dorina Shine, 47, of Ferndale Avenue, has undergone numerous delays because Shine has had several evaluations to determine if she is competent to stand trial.

She has been determined competent.

She is accused of hitting a man in the face with a bottle March 23, 2011, at a Boardman restaurant.

Judge Lou D’Apolito is hearing the case.

Accused of firing gun

WARREN

Anthony Zachery, 43, of Parkman Road is in the Trumbull County Jail without eligibility to make bond after being charged in Warren Municipal Court with being a felon in possession of a firearm and driving under suspension after being arrested at 12:25 a.m. Sunday.

He’s accused of firing a handgun twice into the air from a van at Plymouth Avenue and Scott Street Northeast.

Police located a blue van like the one a witness described parked at the Circle K store on North Park Avenue, and found Zachery in the driver’s seat and a handgun in the center console. Zachery denied firing the gun, but the witness identified him as the shooter, according to a police report.

A passenger, Jessica Witt, 35, of Seneca Street in Niles, was charged with drug-paraphernalia possession, a misdemeanor.

Town-hall meeting set

CANFIELD

The Canfield Police Department invites city residents to attend a town-hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Joyce Brooks Center at the Mahoning County Career & Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road.

The topic will be Canfield’s future and a proposed police levy.

City Manager Joe Warino, finance Director Christine Stack-Clayton, police Chief Chuck Colucci and city council will be in attendance to address the public and field questions.
