Wall of Honor

NILES

Niles American Legion Post 106 will display the Mahoning Valley Wall of Honor from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday in front of the McKinley Memorial in downtown Niles.

The Wall of Honor represents both those killed and missing in action from World War I to current conflicts who resided in the Mahoning Valley’s Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

The project displays a list of 1,600 names collected three years ago by members of the Howland American Legion. The Wall of Honor was constructed and finished by students at TCTC.

Vets: Adopt a dog

HOWLAND

The Trumbull County Dog Pound, 7501 Anderson Ave., is offering military veterans nearly free dog adoptions during the month of July in celebration of the July 4th holiday.

It means military veterans will not have to pay the $50 adoption fee, and the dog will be outfitted with a free microchip for identification purposes.

The only charge will be the $18 license fee, which is mandated by state law.

A veteran must show a veteran identification card at the time of adoption.

Annual turtle derby

LOWELLVILLE

The Youngstown Lions Club will host its 55th annual turtle derby at 6:30 p.m. June 20 near the gazebo on East Water Street.

Turtles sponsored by area businesses and groups will race in conjunction with the Cruisin’ the River car show.

The event is the Lions only fundraiser of the year, and the derby raises nearly $30,000 annually for local charities.

The funds provide for Lions events such as an annual Christmas luncheon for Mahoning Valley special-needs children, at which each receives a gift from Santa Claus, purchased and wrapped by Youngstown Lions members.

For information, contact the 2016 derby chairman Adam Costello at 330-978-4197 or acostello@jamesandsonsins.com.
