Dish channels go dark for millions

Dish channels go dark for millions

NEW YORK

Dish says millions of its subscribers lost access to one or more channels Sunday night because of a fight over how much it should pay for the channels.

Channel owner Tribune Media Co. says its local stations such as CBS, CW and Fox, reach more than 5 million Dish subscribers. The WGN national cable channel, which Tribune says has 7 million Dish subscribers, also went dark.

Dish says it’s offering free antennas so customers can watch the local stations until the companies work it out.

Cable and satellite TV companies such as Dish Network Corp. and Comcast pay station owners such as Tribune and entertainment companies such as Disney for channels. Fights over how much to pay are common as costs have risen. Those costs are passed down to consumers on their cable bills.

5 found shot in New Mexico home

ROSWELL, N.M.

A New Mexico man is accused of fatally shooting his wife and four daughters in their family home and then fleeing in his car, authorities said Sunday.

Juan David Villegas-Hernandez remained at large a day after the five victims were found dead, Roswell police said.

A relative who went to check on the family late Saturday discovered the bodies, police spokesman Todd Wildermuth said. Officers responded and found all five had been shot.

A medical examiner will conduct autopsies to confirm the victims’ identities and cause of death. But police believe they are Villegas-Hernandez’s wife and the couple’s children, Wildermuth said. Investigators say the suspect and his 34-year-old wife share four daughters age 14, 11, 7 and 3.

Villegas-Hernandez may be driving a red, four-door Ford pickup with New Mexico license plate KJS479.

Egypt says time is running out to find black boxes

CAIRO

Egyptian investigators say time is running out in the search for the black boxes from an EgyptAir plane that crashed into the Mediterranean last month, killing all 66 people on board.

In a statement Sunday, they say that searches by ships in the area will intensify, given that only around five days remain before the batteries of the flight’s data and cockpit voice recorders expire and they stop emitting signals.

The boxes could reveal whether a mechanical fault, a hijacking or a bomb caused the disaster. Finding them without the signals is possible but more difficult.

Since the plane disappeared from radar en route to Cairo from Paris, only small pieces of debris and human remains have been retrieved from the crash site. No group has claimed an attack.
