Scholarship
A 2016 Boardman High School graduate has been awarded a U.S. State Department scholarship to study Korean in South Korea for a year.
Nektarios Kasamias is the recipient of a 2016-17 National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship.
Kasamias is one of about 600 students in the U.S. selected for scholarships to study Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian or Turkish overseas, according to a State Department news release.
The NSLI-Y program aims to increase the number of Americans who can speak what are deemed “critical” languages, MIC, and government sections,” the release stated.
Service award
Robert Goeltz, retired chief of the Hermitage Fire Department, recently was honored and recognized for his service and dedication to his community at an annual Firefighters/EMS award reception at River’s Casino in Pittsburgh.
Goeltz received a Commitment to Community Award for his 45 years leading the fire department before his 2015 retirement.
Honorees are nominated throughout the year from Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas.
DOCTORATE
Pharmacy degree
Danielle E. Dunlap graduated last month from Ohio Northern University with a doctorate of pharmacy degree. She is the daughter of James and Trudi Dunlap of Mineral Ridge.
A 2010 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, she has spent six years working toward her degree in the accelerated program at ONU.
While in college, she participated and held leadership positions in Kappa Alpha Theta, the Academy of Student Pharmacists and National Community Pharmacists Association.
She has accepted an offer from Fry’s Food and Drug Stores, a Kroger company, in Gilbert, Ariz., to begin her career as a pharmacist. She is engaged to James Copus of McComb, Ohio.
