YOUNGSTOWN

The only adult who was charged in a series of fights at East High School in March was sentenced Friday to fines, probation and community service.

Jo’Quan Blair, 18, pleaded no contest in municipal court to an amended charge of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. He was found guilty by Judge Robert Milich.

Under his plea agreement, Blair was sentenced to one year’s probation, a $100 fine, court costs and 40 hours of community service.

Assistant City Prosecutor Shelli Freeze said she agreed with the recommendation because Blair has no criminal record. The maximum sentence he could have received was 30 days in jail.

Besides Blair, 14 juveniles face charges in juvenile court for their roles in the fights March 8 at East, which forced the school to close for the day and the next day.

Juvenile charges range from misconduct at an emergency, failure to comply, disorderly conduct, assault and aggravated menacing, all misdemeanors. Felony charges are aggravated riot and inducing panic.

Investigators said the initial fight started after someone’s shoes were scuffed. As confusion reigned, other students decided to start fights with students with whom they had been feuding.
