YWCA summer camps begin Monday

YWCA of Youngstown, 25 W. Rayen Ave., will offer a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) camps for youths this summer.
Raspberry Pi App Camp, for youths entering grades six through 10, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The hands-on tech camp combines information technology, computer technology and application development. Students will build their own working computer using a Raspberry Pi.
Once the computer is complete, they’ll learn basic computer coding and work to develop a simple application. Breakfast and a snack are provided. Students must bring their own lunch. A field trip is included. All students will take home their working Raspberry Pi at the week’s end. Cost is $200.
A Young Artists camp will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 27-30, and students will learn about various art mediums, including sketching, painting, sculpting and graffiti art. A Stop! Hip Hop! camp is set from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. the same week, and students will learn a choreographed hip-hop dance routine.
An art gallery of the students’ work from Young Artists will be displayed, and a final performance from the hip-hop students will be performed during a 5 p.m. June 30 celebration. The event also is part of Women Artists: A Celebration! art series. SMARTS will offer hands-on activities for children.
Students may enroll in either the artist or dance camp, or both. Cost for one camp is $30, and both camps, $50. Students should bring a brown-bag lunch and a water bottle.
The Summer Manufacturing Institute, innovative summer workshops for youths entering fourth to sixth grades in the fall, includes Engineering Our Earth and Avionics.
The engineering focus will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 20-24. Registration is due by Monday. Participants will work with geologists and civil engineers to design and build models of systems to protect waterways.
The avionics focus is set for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 25-29. Registration is due by July 1. Students will explore aviation and its many connections to the Mahoning Valley during this week of hands-on activities.
The cost for SMI camps is $150 per week. Youths may register for one or both. A limited number of scholarships are available. Breakfast and lunch are included.
A Radkids camp also is planned. It focuses on anti- violence, self-defense and more.
