Robinwood Lane Elementary School celebrated its Right to Read Week May 9-13.

The theme was “Reading Makes you Legendary” and each day the students celebrated Right to Read Week in a different way. There were dress up days for the students to participate in, such as wearing red, wearing a hat, dress as what they wanted to be when they grow up, wear black and bring a flashlight to read in the dark and wearing exercise clothes.

The Read-a-Thon Fundraiser ran May 9-21 and is part of the Right to Read Week. Some of the incentives for raising money are a staff free throw contest, a backyard picnic for the school and more. Last year Robinwood raised $955 and used the money to buy Home Reading Pouches for all of the students. Students are reading at least a half hour everyday for two weeks.

“Last year when we did it, we raised not even quite $1,000. So we already doubled what we raised last year,” said Jamie Malish, the reading center teacher at Robinwood.

Guests readers visited different classrooms throughout the week to read a story or two to the students. Board members and administration, Boardman firemen, Paisley House residents, Making Kids Count volunteers and several others showed up to read books.

PTA members worked on decorating the doors of classrooms for the Right to Read Week theme. The kindergarten students had Johnny Appleseed, first-graders had King Author, second-graders had Paul Bunyon, third-graders had Pecos Bill and Slue Foot Sue, and fourth-graders had Annie Oakley.

Special guest speaker Tim Hartman visited Robinwood to speak to the students on May 13 to end the Right to Read week. Hartman has previously visited Robinwood for the Right to Read week and his program is enjoyed by students and faculty.

The students are hoping to reach their $10,000 goal so they can celebrate with a backyard picnic for the entire school.
