English soccer fans tweet US politician who shares team manager’s name
PHILADELPHIA
A Philadelphia politician and the manager of an English soccer team might seem impossible to confuse, except that they’re both named Darrell Clarke.
Fans of the Bristol Rovers have been bombarding the president of Philadelphia’s city council on Twitter for months, expressing frustration at losses and offering support for a job well done.
The Bristol Post reports the English Clarke shuns social media, but fans of the team in the third tier of English soccer needed a way to vent on Twitter.
So they settled for the Philadelphia legislator.
Philadelphia’s Clarke ignored the tweets until May, when he liked a fan’s photo.
His spokeswoman, Jane Roh, tells The Philadelphia Inquirer he relates to the soccer manager because they both get blamed “when things go wrong.”
She adds that her boss is “more of a basketball guy.”
Buyer of Monticello replica is history buff, like 1st owner
SOMERS, Conn.
A doctor who bought a Connecticut home that’s a replica of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello says he’s a history buff and an admirer of the Founding Fathers.
Dr. John Papale lives in Longmeadow, Mass. He made the high bid of $2.1 million for the home in nearby Somers at auction recently.
He tells the Hartford Courant newspaper he plans on moving his family into the home this year.
He first saw the interior of the 10,000-square-foot mansion at a charity event a month ago and visited several more times.
Friendly’s restaurant chain co-founder S. Prestley Blake is a longtime admirer of Jefferson and had the home built for $7.7 million in 2014 just before his 100th birthday.
Police arrest 5 accused of stealing $4,700 in energy drinks
VACAVILLE, Calif.
Police in Northern California say they arrested five men in the theft of $4,700 worth of energy drinks.
San Jose television station KNTV reports Vacaville police officers nabbed the four adults and one juvenile last Friday night as they wheeled a cart full of Red Bull out of a grocery store and loaded it into a waiting U-Haul van.
The Vacaville Police Department says the grocery store was one of many places visited by the group.
Police said the U-Haul van was packed with the energy drink.
Police say the four adults were booked into Solano County jail and the minor into a juvenile hall. All are from Oakland.
