Ramp to I-80 reopens

AUSTINTOWN

The ramp from state Route 11 northbound to Interstate 80 eastbound, which had been closed since December for complete reconstruction and shoulder widening, has reopened.

It was rebuilt as part of the $91.2 million project to widen I-80 from four to six lanes between state Routes 46 and 193, which is scheduled for completion in July 2018.

2 face drug charges

A pair of restaurant employees face charges of drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia after being caught in the Boardman-Canfield Road restaurant’s parking lot Wednesday night, according to a police report.

Police identified the two as Darnell Gibson, 29, of Schenley Avenue, and Frederick Allen, 37, of Judson Avenue.

According to a police report, the men were found in a car in the lot. The car reportedly gave off a strong odor of marijuana, and the officer ordered them out of the vehicle.

Police searched them and the vehicle, finding a marijuana grinder full of suspected marijuana and a bag of pills later identified as Oxazepam, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety. Both men were released on a summons to appear in Mahoning County Area Court here.

Suspected in break-in

YOUNGSTOWN

City and Youngstown State University police caught a man Wednesday afternoon suspected of breaking into a North Side home.

Marquis Williamson, 22, of Ohio Avenue, was taken into custody about 2:55 p.m. in the parking lot of a fraternity house in the 200 block of Park Avenue.

According to reports, police were called to a home in the 800 block of Ohio Avenue for a report of a man who broke a window and tried to break into a home. When police arrived, they found a man in the backyard of a home who ran away and jumped a fence before police caught him.

Reports said a witness identified Williamson as the man who was trying to get inside the home. He was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Damage to Fitch gym

AUSTINTOWN

After a pipe burst in a rest- room Thursday near the Fitch High School gymnasium, Superintendent Vince Colaluca said a crew spent much of the day working on getting the water removed.

“There’s definitely a lot of damage, but we are trying to see if it’s fixable or beyond repair,” he said of the gym’s water-logged, warped floor. Colaluca estimated repairs for the gym floor will be costly.

Ribbon-cutting event

MINERAL RIDGE

The Weathersfield Township trustees and fiscal officer, along with Weathersfield school board members, will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new gazebo, 1388 Stewart St., at 6:30 p.m. today, immediately after the Flag Day Festival parade.
