POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

June 2

Arrest: Darci L. Johns, 50, of East Calla Road, New Middletown, was taken into custody in the 2200 block of East Western Reserve Road on a charge of passing bad checks after two such checks had been presented at Giant Eagle, 3130 Center Road.

June 3

Theft: A Clingan Road woman reported a debit card and $200 stolen.

June 4

Theft: A Bel Aire Lane woman noticed a $400 pair of prescription glasses missing from her vehicle.

June 6

Criminal mischief: A man reported damage to a portion of siding on his garage in the 7600 block of North Lima Road.

Theft: A laptop computer and a backpack were removed from a car in the 3800 block of Atlantic Court.

BOARDMAN

June 3

Assault: Officers arrested 20-year-old Nicholas M. Garritano Jr. on charges of assault and criminal damaging related to an April 27 situation in which his former girlfriend, of St. Albans Drive, alleged Garritano had body-slammed her to the ground during a fight about money she owed him. Garritano, of Albany Court, Canfield, also damaged or destroyed a fan and a cellphone case in her home, a report showed.

Drugs: Police took custody of 38-year-old Leonard S. Vanderhoff of Coronado Avenue, Youngstown, who faced charges of possession of drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence and obstructing official business related to a traffic stop earlier this month in which authorities alleged he had two spoons with burn marks common in drug use and two needles. Vanderhoff also provided a false name and date of birth, then tried to swallow what he claimed was an over-the-counter pill, a report showed.

Theft: A security official with Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road, alleged an employee deliberately failed to ring up about $552 worth of clothing. The worker admitted the theft after having been terminated, a report said.

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into Modarelli’s Sparkle Market, 4121 South Ave., and took eight packages of baby formula and six cartons of cigarettes, for a $1,585 loss.

Criminal damaging: A vehicle in the 100 block of Mathews Road was found with a smashed rear window.

Harassment: A Beech Avenue man said a man to whom the accuser had sold a utility trailer continues to make such calls to him.

Robbery: Sam Daviduk, 20, of North Belle Vista Avenue, Youngstown, faced a robbery charge after $82.50 worth of property, including a T-shirt, was stolen from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive. Before leaving the store, Daviduk tossed a bag of stolen goods, striking an assistant manager in the face, a report stated.

Weapon: Authorities charged a 16-year-old Boardman High School student with one count of illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon, a fifth-degree felony, after a school resource officer investigated other students’ claims that the boy may have brought a weapon to school. The teen was found with a box cutter, a report showed.

June 4

Assault: A traffic stop on Indianola Road resulted in the arrest of David M. Lynn of Indianola, Boardman, on one misdemeanor count each of assault, menacing and criminal damaging after his former girlfriend, of Akron, alleged the 35-year-old Lynn jumped on top of and continually choked her during an argument that apparently had started when he became angered that she looked at his cellphone messages. Lynn also punched and dented her vehicle, then posted a message on Facebook threatening to kill the accuser, she further alleged.

Theft: A Ewing Road woman noticed a debit card missing from her car.

Theft: A gym bag was removed from a vehicle in the 7400 block of Market Street.

Misuse of a credit card: A Poland woman found out her stolen debit card had been used to make 23 unauthorized purchases totaling more than $2,660 at a Doral Drive big-box store.

Theft/menacing: A Salem man discovered a ladder and numerous tools missing from an apartment he owns in the 800 block of Cook Avenue, possibly in retaliation for a bad business deal.

Theft: Lorayne I. Sangregorio, 55, of Southern Boulevard, Boardman, was charged in the theft of $92 worth of merchandise, including cologne, from Walmart.

Criminal damaging: A Stadium Drive woman saw that a windshield-wiper arm on her car had been damaged.

Criminal mischief: Someone in the 1300 block of Doral Drive deflated a vehicle’s passenger-side tire.

Theft: A township man realized $30 was missing from a wallet he had misplaced at a U.S. Route 224 gas station.

Burglary: To a garage in the 5900 block of Sharon Road. A wallet, $90 and other small items were removed from a table.

Theft: A cellphone, gift cards and money were among items taken from a vehicle in the 6300 block of South Avenue.

June 5

Arson: Police responded to a trash-bin fire at Victory Christian Center at Boardman, 8590 Hitchcock Road.

Assault/menacing: The mother of a Boardman-Poland Road restaurant server alleged a co-worker had assaulted and threatened the employee.

Criminal mischief: A woman in the 4600 block of Canterbury Lane discovered various items had been strewn about her vehicle.

Menacing: An Aravesta Avenue woman said she received a threatening text message.

Menacing/criminal damaging: Two people in the 3900 block of South Schenley Avenue told police a man had threatened them and threw several small stones, shattering a window to a residence and doing $300 in damage.

Theft: Kayla A. Hay, 25, and Deborah A. Simmonds, 54, were charged. Police accuse the two Pittsburgh women of stealing close to $396 worth of electronics items from Walmart.

Burglary: To a garage in the 4500 block of New England Boulevard, where a total of $31 was taken from two vehicles.

Theft: A Canterbury Lane man reported a $359 pistol missing from his car.

Drugs: While investigating possible drug activity near Milltrace Drive, authorities charged 28-year-old Sequioua L. King of Ivanhoe Avenue, Youngstown, and 35-year-old Kianna I. Johnson of New Road, Austintown, with trespassing, possession of drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia, and obstructing official business. King and Johnson were in a home in the 50 block of Milltrace without permission and initially refused to answer the door for police; found in the residence were three suspected crack-cocaine pipes, a spoon with burn marks typical in drug use and a damp piece of cotton often used to filter liquid heroin, a report stated.

June 6

Theft: Several keys were stolen from a auto business in the 5200 block of South Avenue.

Theft: An Erskine Avenue man noticed his vehicle had been entered and that $5 and a box of syringes were missing.

Theft/criminal damaging: Someone broke a vehicle window and tried to steal items from the car in the 7400 block of Market Street.

Breaking and entering: Someone forced open a rear door, entered an office at Cobblestone Corner, 6234 Market St., and took a cash register.

Theft/damage: A man reported former tenants stole various appliances and broke a washing machine and dryer left in a residence he owns in the 7000 block of Paxton Road.

Theft: An employee with a Boardman-Canfield Road restaurant alleged a co-worker had taken $187 from her purse.

Harassment: A Willow Drive woman said she’s received such messages on her cellphone and Facebook page.

Theft: A worker for Babies “R” Us, The Baby Super Store, 1240 Doral Drive, noticed three baby monitors missing from a display case.

Vandalism: A man told officers that while driving his mother’s vehicle on Montrose Avenue, someone tossed an object and did an estimated $500 in damage to a passenger-side door frame.

Possible theft: A Youngstown man reported his wallet lost or stolen while in the 400 block of Boardman-Canfield Road.

Theft/criminal damaging: A tool evidently was used to pry open and break a car window in the 7400 block of South Avenue. Stolen was a wallet.

Theft: A global-positioning-system unit, at least 300 compact discs and a small sum of change were stolen from a vehicle in the 7400 block of West Boulevard.

Identity fraud: A Youngstown woman reported being turned down soon after having applied for a township apartment, supposedly for her criminal background but after someone had used her identity.

Theft: Police received complaints that mail had been stolen from mailboxes belonging to eight businesses in the 500 block of East Western Reserve Road.

Theft: After discovering her purse had been stolen, an Afton Avenue woman reported $40 missing from the purse when she found it.

June 7

Assault/criminal damaging: Two people in the 100 block of Clifton Drive told authorities an intoxicated man who had been asked to leave punched or spit on them during a fight, then threw a bottle of alcohol and broke a second-floor window before leaving.

Attempted theft: A man in a gray hooded sweatshirt reportedly entered and fled from a vehicle in the 300 block of Mathews Road.

Arrest: Campbell police handed to Boardman authorities 27-year-old Richard Garcia of Coitsville Road, Campbell, who was wanted on charges of attempted theft and criminal damaging after he was accused of being one of three people who tried to steal a $298 TV on Jan. 20 from Walmart and destroyed a security device on the item. Garcia also was wanted on a felony probation-violation charge from Pennsylvania.

Burglary: A woman in the 5000 block of Forest Park Place told authorities a man inside her apartment pointed a gun at her and fled after having entered via the front door.

Arrest: Officers in the 800 block of Mathews Road picked up 45-year-old Charles G. Beck II, who listed addresses on Mathews Road in Boardman and Four Mile Run Road in Austintown. He was wanted on a warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Stolen property: Police took Paul J. Rocha into custody at his Cook Avenue apartment on a misdemeanor receiving-stolen-property charge after a neighbor alleged Rocha, 27, had taken from the accuser’s apartment a $300 guitar amplifier before pawning it.

Theft: A woman in her mid-20s reportedly stole three ink cartridges from Best Buy, 561 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A man reported a $600 cellphone missing from his Mathews Road home.
