Rebates for counties

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation has determined how much money individual counties will receive from a statewide $15 million rebate the BWC board of directors approved May 26.

The rebates, due to strong investment returns over the past decade, include a high of nearly $1.5 million for Hamilton County to a low of $133 for Fulton County, the only county receiving less than $4,100. Nearly half of all counties will receive at least $90,000.

Mahoning County received $640,512.75; Trumbull County received $429,927.69; and Columbiana County received $181,800.42.

Demand for Ohio workers in occupations related to lightweighting dipped during the first quarter of 2016, according to a report released Tuesday by Lightweight Innovations For Tomorrow and Workforce Intelligence Network. Ohio’s lightweighting occupations include assembly and operation, electrical and mechanical engineering, logistics, skilled materials and procurement and purchasing.

According to Ohio’s first-quarter 2016 market report, online job ads for lightweighting-related occupations dipped by 12 percent since fourth quarter 2015, from 26,163 postings to 23,027 – about even with one year ago, first quarter 2015.

Though the demand dipped for the second-straight quarter, employment in the area of lightweighting in Ohio remains strong with more than 735,000 workers employed as of 2015.

The company had committed tens of millions of dollars acquiring the site, a former zinc smelting operation in Potter Township, Beaver County, and other improvements, including helping a nearby water authority retool. Still, the company had not formally committed to the project until Tuesday.
